FIrmware 2.2 lots of bugs :) heres some tips to save those who upgraded their firmware…

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Bugs, Fixes, Software, Tips

Users, in droves, continue to report a bevy of issues after the update
to iPhone OS 2.2. Among the most serious and widespread problems:
disappearing applications (both Apple’s and third-party), loss of WiFi
connectivity, loss of 3G or EDGE signal strength and an inability to
sync with iTunes.

Downgrading to iPhone OS 2.1 If you are experiencing intolerable
issues after the update to iPhone OS 2.2 and would like to attempt a
downgrade to iPhone OS 2.1, you can try the following procedure. Note,
however, that they procedure may not work, and you may be forced to
restore your iPhone with OS 2.2, potentially losing data in the
process.

  1. Download iPhone OS 2.1 IPSW: [iPhone (first generation) | iPhone 3G]
  2. Turn off your iPhone by holding down the sleep/wake button.
  3. After the phone is off and hold the sleep/wake and home buttons at the same time for 10 seconds.
  4. Release the sleep/wake button; continue to hold down the home
button until iTunes detects the iPhone in “recovery mode.” Your iPhone
    is now in DFU mode.
  5. Hold down the option key on a Mac or alt key on a PC and click “Restore” in iTunes.
  6. Locate the IPSW file and select it.

Disappearing apps (cont.) Dozens if not hundreds of users have
now reported a problem in which various iPhone applications, both
third-party and included, disappear after the update to iPhone OS 2.2.
In some cases, the afflicted iPhones were jailbroken, in others, they
were not.

A sampling of reports from iPhone Atlas readers:

  • “When I upgraded, all my apps non-original apps disappears, except
for google! When I tried to re-download and then resync them onto my
iphone, only some of them would appear. After talking to support, we
tried starting my computer (she said this was happening to some people)
and then syncing. This added a couple more, but about 10 were still
sitting in my itunes and refusing to sync.”
  • “After the os 2.2 update. Safari suddenly disappeared. Syncing etc
didn’t work or resolve the issue. I had to do a restore to get things
    back to normal.”
  • “After upgrading to 2.2 the iphone camera app disappeared, and
every program that uses the camera stopped working also. Restoring the
phone brought it back but then the next Sync made it go away again.
Very annoying. How much QA did they do before they released this
upgrade? I can understand third party apps breaking but not the base
    applications.”
  • “I also have had a problem with a missing application. My camera
application has disappeared and I tried restoring it, and it appeared
for about five minutes, let me take one picture, then was suddenly gone
    again.”

Possible fix: Setup as a new phone Try setting your iPhone up as
a new phone then re-downloading an missing applications. To do this,
perform a restore in iTunes, then choose “setup as a new phone.”

WiFi cannot connect (cont.) Perhaps the most widely reported
problem after disappearing applications is one in which WiFi
connectivity fails after the iPhone OS 2.2 update.

Reports from readers:

  • “Slowly updated my iPod Touch to 2.2 and now wifi does not connect.
Get the check mark but no ip address is assigned. Tried renewing and
rebooting. This is a step backwards.
  • “I cannot connect to my wifi at home and I never had a problem in the past.”

In some cases, “forgetting” the currently configured network and then
reconfiguring it can resolve the issue. Other potential fixes include:

  • Switch the router to WPA2
  • Remove all spaces from the WPA pass phrase
  • Remove all security from the router until a stable connection is attained then reconfigure the security

Cannot sync with iTunes Several users have reported an issue in which they are unable to sync with iTunes after the iPhone OS 2.2 update.

One reader writes:

After the update to OS 2.2, iTunes is unable to completely connect
to iPhone. iTunes message says I must restore iPhone to original
settings. iTunes shows iPhone on side menu, but only partially. And I
have no access to its contents. (For example, iTunes is unable to say
the memo usage, or even the iPhone’s name. It just shows ‘iPhone’ and
nothing more, instead of ‘Andre’s iPhone’ and 2 GB used memo.”

There are a number of potential fixes for this issue. Among the most commonly successful:

  • Reinstall iTunes 7.6.1 (Mac/Windows) Simply download the package, run the installer and restart.
  • Check the USB port Make sure that your iPhone is connected
to a normally powered USB 2.0 port. If you’re using a hub, try
connecting the iPhone directly to the computer or vice versa. Also try
    switching ports.
  • Turn off auto-lock On your iPhone, tap Settings > General > Auto-Lock and set it to “Never” then re-attempt syncing.
  • Restore the iPhone Click the Restore button under the
Summary tab. Restoring the phone will erase contacts, calendars, photos
and other data on the phone (including any third-party applications),
but will restore automatically backed-up information including text
messages, notes, call history, contact favorites, sound settings,
widget settings, etc. Some users have reported that restoring the
iPhone, but not restoring custom settings data from the computer-stored
backup alleviates this issue. Note that you’ll lose text messages,
notes, call history, contact favorites, sound settings, widget
settings, etc with this method, though you can restore them anytime by
simply doing another restore and choosing to push the backup to the
    phone.
  • Play the isolation game Leave your iPhone connected (or plug
it in if it is not already connected). Deselect all sync options. This
requires going to the Info, Ringtones, Music, Photos, Podcasts and
Video tabs and unchecking every box. Sync your iPhone. Note that this
may result in deletion of some data from the iPhone. Re-attempt a sync
with all of your normal options. If it fails, try checking only one or
two sync options and repeat the process until you find the problematic
    sync data.

Linux on the iPhone

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Downloads, Guides, Software, Tips

A
group of developers, led by someone using the handle “planetbeing,”
have produced a method to load Linux 2.6’s kernel to the iPhone. The hack
is supported on all generations of the Apple iPhone and the first
generation of the iPod Touch. According to the announcement, however
“many drivers are still missing, but it’s enough that a real
alternative operating system is running on the iPhone.”

According to the post the following are completed: Framebuffer
driver, Serial driver, Serial over USB driver, Interrupts, MMU, and
Clock, etc. Items still in progress include: Read/Write NAND support,
wireless LAN, touchscreen, sound, accelerometer, baseband support.

You can see a video demonstration.

There are some instructions and a download, but they are not for the inexperienced.

It’s clear that this port of Linux is in its infancy and not of much
use to most iPhone users. Above all there is no phone support in this
port so you’ll end up with an iPhone that won’t make calls, etc.

Erase Contacts on iphone all with one button!

Version: 1.0

Erase Contacts lets you erase all your contacts with one tap instead
of deleting each contact individually. WARNING: Launching this app will
permanently delete all of your contacts.

A basic application to remove all your contacts quickly from your
phone. Launch the app and it’ll do it’s job. Perhaps bulk contact
erasing could be an added on feature if you don’t want to delete them
all, but for what it is, it works fine.

Mac
OS X only: If you’ve been waiting patiently for the popular BitTorrent
application, uTorrent, to find its way to your Mac, your wait is
finally over: uTorrent for the Mac is officially available. We’ve been waiting for the Mac release
for a while now, and leaks of the beta had already made their rounds on
BitTorrent sites (how apropos), but the official release (Intel Macs
only at the moment) of the most popular BitTorrent client
is finally here. The download is still in beta, and the developers
acknowledge that it “may contain serious bugs,” but it still looks and
feels great.

I haven’t had a chance to thoroughly test it yet, so if you give it a try, let’s hear how you like it in the comments.

Firmware 2.2 Feature – Screenshots of Lock Screen

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Announcements, Firmware 2.2, Software, Tips

Apple
I’m sure many of you keep finding new features of firmware 2.2 as you
use it more and more. There are actually quite a few nice new features!
One feature that was brought to my attention is that you can now take
screenshots of the lock screen with firmware 2.2! You could already
take a screenshots of your iPhone or iPod Touch’s screen by hitting the
Lock button and the Home button at the same time. However, this feature
did not work smoothly on the lock screen. Well, it seems Apple has
taken pity on us and made this feature work on the lock screen as well.
Which means, no more trying to trick your lock screen into getting a
screenshot or using lengthy processes to get a screenshot of your lock
screen.

This is a very exciting news for me….I actually wouldn’t have even
realized this if I wouldn’t have received an email about it from a
viewer (thanks for the tip Patrick!). I was still doing it the old school way…signing into my iPhone via mobile. Happy screenshot taking!

Users Face Serious iPhone OS 2.2 Problems

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Bugs, Firmware 2.2, Fixes, Tips

Users who have updated to iPhone OS 2.2 are facing some significant
issues, including problems with third-party apps, Internet connection
issues, problems deleting email and more.

Third-party Applications broken Some third-party applications
will no longer function properly under iPhone OS 2.2 due to API changes
and other modifications. These include a number of applications that
make use of CoreAudio. These applications will generally need to be
updated by their developers. However, you can try uninstalling then
reinstalling applications for problems that do not involve API or other
strict compatibility problems.

“Could not Connect to Internet” Some users are encountering an
inability to connect to the Internet over cellular networks after the
iPhone OS 2.2 update. In some cases, this issue can be resolved by
switching from 3G to EDGE (or, for carriers other than AT&T, the
appropriate GPRS network).

“SIM card not inserted” or PIN lock Some users are receiving an
error message indicating that the SIM card is not inserted, or that a
PIN lock is in place when none should exist.

The SIM recognition issue can sometimes be resolved by removing
the iPhone’s SIM card, then connecting it to your computer and
restoring. iTunes may then reload the iPhone software successfully,
after which you can re-insert the SIM card and attempt synchronization
with iTunes.

If you get the PIN lock message, try the suggestions in this tech note.

Kilometers instead of miles in Google Maps It appears that
Google Maps for the iPhone now displays kilometers instead of miles for
various countries. You can temporarily resolve the issue by selecting
‘USA’ in International settings, though this obviously introduces other
problems for users outside the U.S.

Problems deleting email Some users are unable to delete emails
from certain accounts, especially AOL accounts after the 2.2 update.
This problem can generally be resolved by navigating Settings >
Mail, Contacts, Calendars > (Your account name) > Advanced >
Deleted Mailbox, then setting for the “On My iPhone” Trash for a POP
account, or “On the Server” for an IMAP account.

App Store extremely slow The App Store is extremely slow after
the iPhone OS 2.2 update for some users. This may be a server-side
problem that Apple will resolved shortly.
