Steve Wozniak Talks About Steve Jobs’ Health

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Announcements, Apple, News, Videos

In a conversation with NBC
about Steve Jobs’ leave from Apple, co-founder Steve Wozniak said this
break could be exactly what Steve — and Apple — needs. Woz had some
great things to say, and my favorite was his answer to the question,
“If Steve [Jobs] were not at Apple, would the company be as able to
produce the kind of products we’ve seen?” Woz’s answer:

“Way too
hypothetical. I would never venture a guess … obviously, Steve’s very
important but Apple has some incredible people, followers of the Apple
mentality, followers of Steve himself.”

In other words (if I may
paraphrase you, Woz), Steve isn’t Apple and Apple isn’t Steve. No
matter what happens, the company will be fine. Good call.

A bit of the audio from the Woz interview was played on last night’s talkcast, along with your voicemail wishes for Steve Jobs’ improved health. Mike assures me he’ll have the show up and online tonight.

Safari the Only Sure-Fire Way to Update iPhone’s Auto-Correct Database [Autocorrect]

Author: dexxter  //  Category: 3g Iphone, Fixes, Guides, Hacks, Iphone, Tips

I was chatting with some colleagues today who complained that their iPhones never seemed to learn new words properly and permanently, no matter how often they typed them. In the case of the Ars staff, I won’t lie—those words are typically naughty ones that even our own readers angrily write us en masse about. Common dogma says you can train your phone to “remember” words if you type them repeatedly, but the staff has discovered (much to their dismay) that this tends to last for only a short period of time before it forgets them again.

Upon hearing this, I decided to do a little investigation, and what I found rather surprised me; the way my 2.2 iPhone updated its user word database wasn’t what I expected.

Ars Creative Director Aurich Lawson helped suggest test-phrases for this exercise.

That database is stored in the “mobile” user directory, in /private/var/mobile/Library/Keyboard. The file is called dynamic-text.dat. It consists of a (mostly) plain text list of words that the iPhone has marked for special attention. Once a word appears in that list, the autocorrect feature updates itself and accepts those items as proper spellings. It’s really convenient for jargon words and last names that are part of your normal typing but don’t appear in the standard dictionary.

In order to test the data update, I fired up the Notes application and started typing words in an attempt to see how many repetitions it would take until the dictionary “learned” them. About an infinite number, it would appear. I say this because, after typing and typing and typing, the last modified date for my dynamic-text.dat file remained yesterday.

-rw------- 1 mobile mobile 1244 Jan 15 18:40 dynamic-text.da

It wasn’t until I left Notes and hopped over to Mobile Safari that I was able to make any difference at all. In Mobile Safari, I opened a new browser, typed the same words into the Google search field and, in the words of Steve Jobs, boom. Just as one would hope, the dynamic-text.dat file immediately updated without any further repetition needed. I could also see the words by looking through the file.

-rw------- 1 mobile mobile 1359 Jan 16 11:51 dynamic-text.da

To test my update, I then returned to Notes and tried typing my words again. This time, Notes immediately recognized my new additions as correct, without offering a special suggestion bubble.

What did I uncover here today? Well, clearly, not every iPhone application can “learn” words. Notes seems to be brain-dead in that regard. At the same time, using Safari’s Google text entry field worked every time, expanding the database and adding new items to my keyboard dictionary.

This isn’t the way you’d expect the iPhone to work. You’d imagine that the keyboard learning algorithm would apply to all text no matter where you enter it, but apparently not. Hopefully this little trick will help you out when you want to add words that you don’t want autocorrected.

redsn0w – Jailbreak for iPod Touch 2G (2nd Generation) Video

The Dev Team, specifically MuscleNerd, has released a video via qik.com
of a jailbroken iPod Touch 2G (2nd Generation). Unfortunatly the
jailbreak only works when tethered (connected via USB) to a computer.
They are working on a fix for this but have proven the jailbreak to
work by running terminal, Cydia and an NES Emulator (Nintendo). Let us
know if the comments if you have an iPod Touch 2G waiting to jailbreak.
Here’s the video:

Apple Media Advisory

Apple CEO Steve Jobs today sent the following email to all Apple employees:

Team,

I am sure all of you saw my letter last week sharing something very
personal with the Apple community. Unfortunately, the curiosity over my
personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my
family, but everyone else at Apple as well. In addition, during the
past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex
than I originally thought.

In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health,
and to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary
products, I have decided to take a medical leave of absence until the
end of June.

I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for Apple’s day to day
operations, and I know he and the rest of the executive management team
will do a great job. As CEO, I plan to remain involved in major
strategic decisions while I am out. Our board of directors fully
supports this plan.

I look forward to seeing all of you this summer.

Apple forces Wired to take down netbook OSx86 video

Wired Gadget Lab
has taken down a video made by [Brian X. Chen] in which he gives a
brief overview and demonstration of how to install OSX on an MSI Wind netbook.
This apparently didn’t sit well with Apple, who contacted Wired and
complained; Wired agreed and removed the video. Frankly, we’re
disappointed with Wired’s response. While they were technically posting
content which is questionable at best—in the video, Brian mentions that
this is illegal and that it would be a good idea to have a retail copy
of OSX on hand, but then goes on to point out that you can also
download the hacked operating system off The Pirate Bay, Isohunt,
etc—the video in and of itself wasn’t illegal, and thus Wired comes off
as susceptible to what amounts to bullying by Apple. We’re all about
creativity and innovation, and stifling that innovative spirit has
never worked well in the long run.

Fortunately, if you’re feeling like you’ve missed out on the video, don’t despair: Gizmodo has posted the video on their website for you to view and enjoy.

Guys feel free to email me or message me on live chat if you need any help with OSx86!

2nd Gen iPod Touch Jailbreak Coming Soon?

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Iphone Dev, Ipod Touch, Jailbreak

DevTeam The Dev Team has left yet another cryptic message
on their website today. It leads one to believe that we might soon be
seeing a jailbreak for the 2nd generation iPod Touch. I know this has
been long awaited so, we will have to wait and see what happens. As of
now, the only clue we get is an abstract image on redsn0w.com. Below is
the message from the Dev Team…to see the image head over to redsn0w.com. We will keep you updated on any changes.

Cryptic Message:

* Well it isn’t a British Thermonuclear Device.
* It isn’t an episode from “The Twilight Zone”
* And it certainly isn’t iPhone 3G related (right now)
* There is one other device…
* It fits in your pocket..
* What can it be?

Apple allows 3rd-Party Web Browsers into AppStore – Firefox or Opera Browser for iphone soon?

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Apple, Appstore, Downloads, Software, Tips

Very exciting news, Apple has started to
allow 3rd-party web browsers into the AppStore for use on iPhone or
iPod Touch. Now you can drop that always-crashing Safari web browser
that comes with every iPhone and iPod Touch and perhaps use a better,
faster, stabler web browser. This means fabulous, world-famous browsers
such as Firefox and Opera may one day be on your iPhone!

Released Web Browsers so far:

Edge Browser – Free - No loss of screen real estate to the address or navigation bars

Incognito – $1.99USD - Now you can browse without leaving a history of any kind.

WebMate: Tabbed Browser
- $0.99USD - Web Mate simplifies browsing by queuing up all the links
you click on, then allowing you to view them one by one when you’re
ready.

Shaking Web – $1.99USD - adds a sophisticated algorithm to compensate for small hand shaking to allow for easier reading.

Apple has not made an official announcement but finally Apple has
lightened up and allowed 3rd-party web browsers to be used on the
iPhone!

Windows drivers for PS3 controllers – Can’t wait for Mac Drivers for PS3 Controllers!

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Downloads, Games, Hacks, Mods, Tips, Windows

Recently, a Japanese coder on the DCEmu Forums released Windows
drivers for DualShock 3 controllers. While the drivers only support
using the controllers over USB and not bluetooth, they do include force
feedback and Sixaxis support. Included with the drivers is a
configuration tool, and though it appears to be in Japanese there is
some explanation of how to use it included in the forum post. We have
not tested these personally, but you can try out the drivers for
yourself  by downloading them from the forum here.

Download Free Music With Iphone! iDownload!

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Appstore, Downloads, Hacks, Software, Tips

Available In: App Store       Price: $0.99

iDownload
I must admit that I’ve had this app on my iPhone for a while now, and I
had been putting off writing the review. Honestly, I wasn’t quite sure
what to do with this app, and I wanted to make sure I explored all of
the possible uses before I made my final opinions. First, the most
obvious use for this application is to allow one to download files
directly onto the iPhone. I haven’t had much use for this. For one, the
iPhone does not have a built-in method for accessing files as my
previous Windows Mobile devices did. There’s no “My Computer” to be
found (thankfully) on my iPhone home screen. Thus, I’ve never been
tempted to download and store any files on my iPhone. If I needed to
look at a file, the iPhone usually took care of this by opening the
PDF, Word, or Excel document and that was that.

Overview
With iDownload, you
are able to download files directly to your iPhone, as well as share
files with any web-enabled device. This is supposed to be two-way, so
files can be transferred both to and from the iPhone. Although the
instructions on the website state that it would be “easy as 1, 2, 3”, I
decided to put each function to the test. My results follow below:

Downloading Files
Again, I wasn’t sure where this feature would come in handy. I couldn’t
think of a file that I needed to download, but then I read some of the
individual reviews on the iTunes store site. Seeqpod.com kept coming up
in conversations as a potential site to use with iDownload. I checked
it out using the mini-browser that is included within the iDownload
app. I proceeded to listen to several musical files which after I
confirmed the “Download Now” prompt, subsequently began to download
into the Files section of the app. Within seconds, I had a few songs on
my iPhone that I could play at any time. For the record, I chose songs
that I already owned, since I have a sneaky feeling that not doing so
would be a violation of some kind of copyright law.

Sharing Files
The next step in testing iDownload was to see how easy it would be to
share files to and from the iPhone. The instructions said that I needed
to enable sharing on iDownload and point my web browser to the web
address displayed on my iPhone. Although it did not work the first
time, on the second attempt, sure enough I saw a list of the same files
on my computer screen. I then got excited and immediately tested the
upload file option. Once it was enabled on my iPhone, I proceeded to
upload this very review onto my iPhone, and within seconds, I was
viewing this document on my iPhone.
