Review: award-winning Zen Bound for iPhone

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Downloads, Games, Software

A number of months ago it was confirmed that Zen Bound ($4.99, App Store)
was coming to the iPhone and iPod touch. Today, that has finally come
true, offering a puzzling style of gameplay that involves wrapping rope
around carved wooden animals.

It may sound like a strange idea for a game, but Zen Bound has also
been awarded first prize in ‘Excellence in 3D’ at the IMGA awards, as
well as being a finalist for ‘Best iPhone game’ and ‘Audio Achievement’
at the IGF Mobile 2009. The developers also made the popular SPiN,
which also involves rotating objects. So there’s obviously something
special about Zen Bound – and it was obviously worth a closer look.

The game’s concept is simple, and captivating for that very reason. In
Zen Bound, you must slowly wrap a piece of rope around a simple 3D
model, staining the model’s surface with paint as you twist and turn
through each level. There are no time limits, as this is a game that
encourages a slower pace and a more mindful way of playing.

The game offers you two ‘trees’ for you to work through – the Tree of
Reflection, and the Tree of Challenge. Levels are represented as tags
hanging from the trees, and as you unlock more levels, lamps hanging
from other branches begin to light up. All these elements also react to
the tilt of the iPhone or iPod Touch you’re using, which though
unnecessary, adds so much and shows the care that has been put into the
experience.

At first, the controls can feel slightly difficult to manage. Dragging
with one fingers to spin the model around, and two fingers to spin, can
make the seemingly simple task of wrapping rope around simple objects
quite difficult at first. But once you discover that the tilt of the
phone also controls where the rope is being held, things start to move
along. Within a few levels, controlling the rope seems beautifully easy
as you use a very intuitive and clever mixture of the touch and tilt
controls.

Because of this, Zen Bound is a game neither played in portrait or
landscape mode – rather, you will find yourself turning your iPhone or
iPod Touch in your hands nearly as much as the model in the game, which
is either a wonderful accident or a masterful stroke of design. This
may be the most well designed control system for the iPhone and iPod
touch yet.

Neither does it take any hesitation to also mention that Zen Bound has
what can be described as the best 3D graphics on the iPhone and iPod
Touch to date. The models, though not certainly not complex, are
exquisitely rendered with textures and amazing shading that — combined
with the involving control scheme — can create an engrossing illusion
of actually manipulating an object in your hands.

The almost excessive level of artistry that Secret Exit has poured into
this game does not stop there. Just after starting Zen Bound, you are
softly reminded that this game was designed for headphones as the sound
of wind, water, haunting cymbals and humming chants enter the mix. The
soundtrack, produced by Ghost Monkey,
is perfectly suited to the game, and compliments the satisfying creaks
and twangs of the rope as you pull your way through each challenge. As
an added bonus, Secret Exit allows all buyers of Zen Bound to download
a 320kbit version of the soundtrack.

What also deserves a mention is the Zen aspect of the game, which –
while obviously permeating the rough, organic graphics and downtempo
soundtrack — comes through in less obvious ways. The slow pace of the
game and its entrancing control scheme encourage reflection, while even
the simple titles like ‘Humility’ (the very first level, naturally) or
‘Pride’ encourage thought. The gameplay style has the uncanny effect of
allowing you to both get into ‘the zone’ for ideal play and letting
your mind wander into other thoughts.

As such, the game could very nearly be considered a must-have. At
$4.99, Zen Bound has a very reasonable price for such a surprisingly
engrossing and impressive experience, and with plenty to play through,
it may well become a consistent favorite — as well as a great example
of potential — for the App Store.

Apple currently does not allow an app such as iBluetooth to do this
(Stupid Apple) so don’t expect this app to be made available on the

Check out this new way of organising iphone apps on your iphone via itunes!

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Mac, Software, Videos, Windows

This is a very good idea. Instead of organizing
your applications directly on your iPhone or iPod Touch, why not do it
on your PC or Mac via iTunes with the comfort of using a mouse. I
believe using a mouse to do app organizing would be much more easier
than using your finger on the iPhone or iPod Touch especially when you
have tons of pages along with tons of icons/apps. I wonder when this feature will be out…take a look at the video below:

Dashboard for iphone!

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Hacks, Mods, Software

Steven Troughton-Smith, the developer of Stack and other apps, has recently posted some videos of a hack for the iPhone called Dashboard for the iPhone. Looks pretty sweet! Right now he’s only shown a clock and sticky note widgets. The Dashboard appears when you tap the home button once from the springboard (home screen). Just tap the home screen again for them to disappear. Not sure how this affects the short cut that jumps you to the first home screen when you are on other home screens. The effects are pretty nice (see videos below).

The original: beware of imitators!
Have
you ever wanted to take pictures at night but couldn’t? Well, no
problem – introducing the Night Vision application for the iPhone. Now
you will never miss capturing a special moment on your iPhone camera,
regardless of the time of day!
While the iPhone is an amazing
multipurpose device, one of its weaknesses is a lack of a camera flash.
With this application you will be able to take detailed pictures in low
light conditions – without the need for flash photography.
Night Vision is extremely easy to use! Take a picture from within the application, and it takes care of the rest.
This
technology is not just an image filter or “snake oil”. Using our patent
pending algorithm we are able to extract detail out of images that are
seemingly “too dark”. Once the algorithm does its magic, the
application will map the new image to a green spectrum – the most
sensitive spectrum for the human eye. As a final step, the application
will optimize the image for the iPhone LCD screen. Take a look at our
sample gallery to see how much difference Night Vision makes!
Download
this application today and enjoy countless hours of nighttime
photography. We encourage all of our users to experiment, take
pictures, and have fun with our app. Also, look forward to even more
optimizations in future versions at no additional cost.
Disclaimer: For best results, use this application in low light conditions – not complete darkness.

BeejiveIM is Pricey But an Awesome Instant Messaging iPhone App

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Downloads, Software

BeejiveIM (pronounced bee-hive) is a feature
rich instant messaging native client for the iPhone that keeps you
connected with IM buddies on MSN/Windows Live, Yahoo, AIM/MobileMe,
Google Talk, Jabber and MySpace while you’re on-the-go.

When I
first saw the $15.99 price tag of BeejiveIM, I felt it was expensive
especially since I have been spoilt by free instant messengers on the computer.

But I decided to check it out as I had liked the web version of BeejiveIM.

BeejiveIM works with multiple IM networks such as AIM/iChat/MobileMe,
MSN/Windows Live, Yahoo!, MySpace, GoogleTalk, ICQ, & Jabber. With
limited resources on mobile phones (and the limitation of not being
able to run apps in the background in case of the iPhone), the ability
to connect to multiple IM networks is very useful. Its more practical
to run a single app rather than running multiple IM apps on a mobile
phone. There are other IM clients for the iPhone that also provide this
functionality.

You need to first register all your IM accounts. After logging in to
each of your IM accounts, BeejiveIM will show you the list of buddies
across all your IM networks. You can change your online status as
available, away, busy or invisible for each of your IM accounts or
across all your IM accounts.

Tapping on any of your buddies from the buddy list brings up the chat
window. The interface is very similar to iPhone’s SMS application which
shows message bubbles as you chat with your friend.

You can also insert emoticons by tapping on the smiley face button that
is available when you start typing a message. When you tap on the
smiley face button, the emoticon picker replaces the keyboard. You can
select the emoticons to insert it in the chat message.

BeejiveIM provides full Unicode support which means you can chat in any language. You can also chat in landscape mode and allows you to send chat history via email.

One
of the coolest features of BeejiveIM is the way they have implemented
the feature to switch between chat windows. You have multiple options
to switch chat windows:

  • To switch to another chat window, all you need to do is tap at the
center of the status bar (with your buddy’s name), this will display a
bar with the list of active chat windows. You can then select one of
them to switch to that chat window.

Awesome Instant messaging iPhone app - BeejiveIM

  • Double tap the chat screen to go back to the list of active chat windows.

  • Shake the phone if you have Shake To Switch Chats setting enabled.
You can enable Shake To Switch Chats by launching the Settings app and
then going to BeejiveIM -> Enable Shake. You can also set the level
of sensitivity for the Shake to Switch chat feature.

BeejiveIM has lots of other tricks up its sleeve such as the ability to
send voice notes and photos. You can also send SMS messages to your
friends by using your Yahoo (some international numbers, see http://messenger.yahoo.com/features/sms) and AIM accounts (to US numbers).

BeejiveIM offers tons of customization via the Settings app such as:

  • You can configure how the buddy list should be sorted. You can hide buddies who are offline.

  • You can also turn on or turn off auto-correct, auto-capitalization, allow or disable landscape mode and emoticons.

Awesome Instant messaging iPhone app - BeejiveIM

  • You can also enable or disable Notification and alerts such as when
a message is sent, message is received and Turn off or turn on
vibration mode when you receive a message.

Awesome Instant messaging iPhone app - BeejiveIM

  • BeejiveIM also offers various options to customize the user
interface such as the buddy list layout, chat background, incoming
bubble color, outgoing bubble color etc.

Awesome Instant messaging iPhone app - BeejiveIM

I am not sure if it has anything to do with some limitation in iPhone’s
SDK but it would have been more convenient to be able to change the
settings from within BeejiveIM rather than using the Settings app.

As you might already know, due to the limitation of iPhone’s SDK it is not possible to run iPhone apps in the background which affects the user experience of instant messenger apps such as BeejiveIM.

BeejiveIM
is offering a feature called “Push Email Alert” as a workaround. “Push
Email Alert” is not enabled by default but you can turn it on via the
Settings app. Once the service is enabled, Beejive will monitor
any incoming chat messages, even when BeejiveIM is closed due to
disconnection or a phone call. When you receive a message, Beejive will
send you an email with the message and a link. Clicking on the link
will open up BeejiveIM so that you continue with the conversation. This
is not the perfect solution but at least it’s a workaround until Apple allows third party applications to run in background.

One of the things I am always worried about using iPhone apps where I need to enter my email account details; is security.
Folks at Beejive have clarified that all account information (usernames
& passwords) are stored locally on the iPhone and not kept on our
servers.

BeejiveIM is pricey but it is an awesome instant messaging client for the iPhone. It is one of the most polished iPhone apps that I have used. If you are an IM addict then it is definitely worth the high price.

These are still initial impressions as I have recently started using it, I
will keep updating this post in case I find an issue or if I find
something good about the iPhone app that I have mentioned earlier or based on feedback from you folks.

You can also checkout the web version of BeejiveIM for the iPhone which is free by pointing your iPhone’s Safari browse to http://iphone.beejive.com
to get an idea but it is important to note that there are many features
mentioned here that aren’t available in the iPhone web app.

You can download BeejiveIM using this direct iTunes link.

Adobe and Apple Working to Put Flash on iPhone—Someday [Flash]

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Announcements, Apple, Flash, News

Adobe’s
CEO told a World Economic Forum crowd that Apple and his company are
working to bring Flash to the iPhone. Unanswered is when that happens,
and in what form.

The Boy Genius Report blog takes a largely positive tack on Shantanu Narayen’s remarks,
but wisely wonders whether Flash will arrive as a standard in-browser
function for mobile Safari, or as a stand-alone app made for browsing
specific sites. PCWorld offers a more downbeat take,
noting the technical hurdles—processor, memory, and Apple’s needs for
access rights restrictions—and a sense of “boardroom wrangling.”

Most
would imagine that Flash on the iPhone is a matter of when, not
if—especially if Flash succeeds in pushing its Flash Lite platform onto
Windows Mobile and Android phones. But let’s hear your take—do you
enjoy having the web stripped of flashing, shiny doodads while you’re
mobile, or does a lack of Flash cripple your browsing life? Tell us in
the comments.
