iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 4 and iTunes Pre-Release 8.2 with Blu-Ray Support?

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Apple, Firmware 3.0, News, iTunes

Ahh, gotta love new updates coming to the iPhone OS 3.0 Beta and then finding out iTunes 8.2 might have Blu-Ray support. Yeah, finally Blu-Ray support coming to iTunes and long awaited Mac. Pretty awesome.

As of right now, there’s no mention of new features on Beta 4 of the iPhone OS 3.0 but I’m sure there’s great new fixes and a much much more stable beta.

Over at Macrumors, one of their forum posters discovered that iTunes 8.2 Pre-Release refers to Blu-Ray Data, of course, suggesting that the final release of iTunes 8.2 will fully support Blu-Ray discs.

You may be thinking, why blu-ray support on iTunes? Well, I have an idea on why blu-ray would be great, and thats for backing up your iTunes purchases. (Yes, I do buy stuff from iTunes) Before, you would be able to back up onto CDs and DVDs and now, hopefully, you’ll be able to back up onto Blu-Ray discs assuming, of course, you have a blu-ray burner. What do you guys think on the idea of Blu-Ray support coming to iTunes? Good idea? Bad Idea? Let us know in the comments!

iTicker Widget – Scrolling RSS Feed on Your SpringBoard

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Cydia, Downloads, Hacks, Mods, Software, Tips

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

iTicker Widget iTicker Widget is an “updating ticker of sports scores, news headlines, or any other RSS feed that you would like displayed right on your iPhone 3G’s springboard!” Note: I know the developer’s description of the application says “iPhone 3G’s springboard” however, I have tested iTicket Widget on a first gen iPhone and it worked as well.

Once you install iTicker Widget, you can activated/deactivate it via WinterBoard. When you activate it, it will add a text line under your forth row of icons (just above your dock) that will scroll through an RSS feed. You can customize the RSS feed to whatever you would like it to be however, in order to do so, you will need to be comfortable using SSH. If you are comfortable with SSH and would like to customize the application…below are instructions.

The instructions below are actually the developer’s instructions. Usually, I end up writing my own instructions but, the developer’s are perfect so I thought I would just use those!

Instructions:

Once in your iPhone you’ll want to navigate to the following folder: /Library/Themes

Here you will see a folder for iTicker. Open that folder and you will see a file called: Widget.html

Open up this file in notepad or any HTML editor you like such as Dreamweaver. Look for this line of code:

http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=5hrDg6Ir3hGzle_u6icw5g&_render=rss

Replace that URL with the URL of your RSS feed that you want to use. Here is a list of individual sports feeds you can use so only that sport displays.

MLB use: http://www.mpiii.com/scores/mlb.php
NBA use: http://www.mpiii.com/scores/nba.php
NFL use: http://www.mpiii.com/scores/nfl.php
NHL use: http://www.mpiii.com/scores/mlb.php
NCAA use: http://www.mpiii.com/scores/ncaa.php
WNBA use: http://www.mpiii.com/scores/wnba.php

If you want to have multiple feeds show for example MLB and NFL you will need to combine them into one feed. To do that please follow this guide here.

I actually replaced the http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=5hrDg6Ir3hGzle_u6icw5g&_render=rss code with AppleiPhoneSchool’s RSS url (which is http://feeds.feedburner.com/AppleiPhoneSchool) and it scrolled through all our top articles…it displayed the title of each article. It was pretty cool.

I also made one more change to the file and moved the text over so that is started a little close to the left side of my iPhone. If you would also like to adjust your text…see the instructions below.

1. Once in your iPhone you’ll want to navigate to the following folder: /Library/Themes

2, Here you will see a folder for iTicker. Open that folder and you will see a file called: Widget.html

3. Open up this file in notepad or any HTML editor you like such as Dreamweaver. Look for this line of code:

margin-left:59px;

4. Change the 59px to whatever suits your customizations. Note: The smaller the number, the closer the text will start to the left side of your iPhone. (Example…if you change 59 to 39, the text will start closer to the left side of your iPhone.)

For more information about the iTicker Widget…check out the developer’s site. You can get this app via the modmyi source.

Downgrade iPhone 3G Baseband from 2.30.03 to 2.28.00

Author: dexxter  //  Category: 3g Iphone, Cydia, Firmware 2.2.1, Hacks, Iphone Dev, Mods, Tips, Top Posts, Unlock, YellowSnow

DownBB - Downgrade 2.30.03 baseband to 2.28.00 baseband

DownBB, lets you do just what the title of this post suggests. Lets you downgrade your baseband from 2.30.03 to 02.28.00. 2.30.03 broke the hole needed to successfully run yellowsn0w, iPhone Dev Team clearly warned against updating to firmware 2.2.1 without preserving the baseband of 2.2 or previous firmwares with the world famous PwnageTool

It’s really easy to downgrade your baseband, you can do it right within Cydia with DownBB!

  1. Fire up Cydia
  2. Install iClarified source from Sources section or http://cydia.iclarified.com/
  3. Refresh sources, if needed
  4. Tap Sections and Scroll to iClarified and tap
  5. Find DownBB and Install
  6. Confirm you want to Install. Cydia will do the rest

List of Must-Have Utility and System Applications

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Appstore, Cydia, Downloads, Software, Top Posts

I decided that it is time to create a list of the all the must-have system/utility applications for the iPhone and/or iPod Touch. So, below are 16 system and utility applications that you will definitly want to check out…for more info about each one, click on their title, it links to more info. I tried not to list the apps in any particular order also, some of the apps listed overlap in functionality (for example, if you have IntelliScreen…you would not need a status bar notifier application). Let me know in the comments what some of the must-have apps are on your iPhone/iPod Touch! Ok, here we go!

Note: These are all jailbroke applications (for more info on jailbreaking…check out our f.a.q page).

SBSettings – SBSettings is a system application and easily allows you to toggle a variety of Settings such as WiFi, Bluetooth, Edge, Phone, SSH and Brightness. This is done by swiping your finger across the status bar which bring up the SBSettings application. You are also able to do things like respring your SpringBoard, view your IP address, turn off your iPhone and much more. The app is themeable and there are quit a few add-on toggles (such as Vibrate, Rotation Inhibitor, Autolock…etc). This is probably the application I use most often on my iPhone and is most definitly a must-have!

SMSettings mhsusbsettings

WeatherIcon – WeatherIcon is technically considered a “tweak.” This app adds the current temp and weather conditions on your stock weather icon and/or status bar. I haven’t done a review of this application lately but, it is much more user-friendly than it used to be. In the settings of the app (which are located in your stock Settings app) you have quit a few options such as the ability to turn on/off the status bar image and temp, the ability to choose where the weather info is pulled from, the ability to choose the refresh rate and even the ability to change the location as you travel.

mhsuweathericon WeatherIcon

Statusbar Notifiers Statusbar Notifiers – Statusbar notifiers are system applications that allow you to be notified when you have a missed call, text, email, voicemail…etc by adding an icon to your status bar. There are quit a few options for status notifier applications based on how much functionality you are looking for. Apps like Extended Preferences and Supreme Preferences give you statusbar notification along with a lot of other settings/system options. Apps like Notifier, StatusNotifier and Taskbar Notifier will give you basically just the status bar notification functionality.

mhsunotifier Statusbar Notifier

WinterBoard WinterBoard – WinterBoard is a system application that allows you to theme and mod your iPhone/iPod Touch. It is here that you can activate themes and any other mod that is created for it. “WinterBoard provides hooks that let graphic artists safely and simply theme almost anything in Apple’s OS, including third party software downloaded from App Store.”

mhsuwinterboard Theme

MakeItMine MakeItMine – MakeItMine is a utility that allows you to easily change your Carrier or Banner to whatever you would like it to be. This means you are able to change the Carrier logo on your statusbar to say your name or your favorite food or whatever you want! The same goes for your Banner…which is where your time is located on your statusbar. A very simple, but useful application.

mhsumakeitmine

CyDelete – CyDelete is technically considered a “tweak” in Cydia and is an application that allows you to delete Cydia applications right from your SpringBoard just as you would an App Store application. Personally, this is one of my favorite applications…it makes deleting Cydia apps much faster and much easier!

CyDelete CyDelete

HomeScreen2.0 – HomeScreen2.0 is totally on this list due to personal bias…I love this lockscreen mod! HomeScreen2.0 is a mod that allows you to view a month calendar and a weeks weather forecast…as well as displays all your missed events…right on your lock screen. This “app” is not available in Cydia and does take some knowledge of SSH in order to install but, if you are interested, check out my step-by-step instructions on how to install it.

HomeScreen2.0 HomeScreen2.0 HomeScreen2.0

hClipboard – hClipboard is a system application that allows you to copy and paste information on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Until the 3.0 firmware is released…this is most definitely your best copy and paste option.

hClipboard hClipboard

Emoji
– Emoji is a “tweak” that allows you to activate the Japanese Emoticons on your iPhone. I’m not sure why Apple did not activate these on all iPhones to begin with! Once installed and activated, the Emojis show up as an option on your keyboard. There are a ton of fun ways to use these and they can be used almost anywhere the keyboard is available. The cool thing that is that even if a person doesn’t have this tweak installed on their iPhone or iPod Touch (even if their iPhone and/or iPod Touch is not even jailbroke)…they are able to see the Emojis if you send them a text or an email or a tweet that includes them.

Emoji Emoji Emoji

Backgrounder – Backgrounder (or Insomina) is a system application that allows apps on your iPhone or iPod Touch to run in the background. This is perfect for apps like Pandora because you are able to keep Pandora playing in the background as you use other apps on your iPhone!

Backgrounder

QuickGold – QuickGold is a system application that allows you to search for basically anything on your iPhone or iPod Touch. The app is easily launched by tapping the Home Button (single tap) while on your SpringBoard. You are then able to search for applications, contacts, sms, safari history…basically anything. It is similar to Apple’s Spotlight! Search on firmware 3.0.

quickgold02

Categories Categories – Categories is a system application that allows you to create folders on your SpringBoard in which you can then add applications to. This not only allows for a more organized SpringBoard but, also the ability to install more applications than the nine page limit.

Categories Categories

20 Second Lock Screen – 20 Second Lock Screen is a system application that will keep your lock screen on for 20 seconds before it goes into sleep mode. This allows for more time if you have a lock screen mod that displays information such as weather, emails, calendar events…etc.

Firmware 3.0 Beta 3 Released To Developers

Author: dexxter  //  Category: 3g Iphone, Downloads, Firmware 3.0, Software

Apple has recently released firmware 3.0 Beta 3, build 7A280f, to developers. Along with the firmware there are also updates to the SDK. Changes include performance improvements, user interface updates and alterations to Spotlight search. How does this affect you? Well one big issues with Beta 3 is it will not run apps that aren’t made for 3.0. This means none of your apps would work but the ones you’ve developed for 3.0 yourself. (as of writing this article, beta 3 is not jailbroken either.)

UPDATE: The note below is for the emulator in the SDK, not for the firmware on the iPhone. (Thanks to Tetanus in the comments for this info)

“Applications targeting devices prior to iPhone OS 3.0 beta cannot be tested in this seed, this bug is intended to be ?xed in a future seed.”

Arstechnica also notes there are updates to the API:

The major change in the UIKit API is that Apple has added separate types for the three notification methods: badge, text alert, and sound. Developers can register their apps for these different notification types individually for the needs of their users. Previously, apps registered to received remote notifications but controlled the type via settings. Developers we spoke to universally agreed that this was a welcome improvement.

Google Voice for iPhone and iPod Touch Coming Soon [IPhone]

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Appstore, Downloads, Iphone, News, Software

iPhone/iPod touch only: A new iPhone and iPod touch application called GV Mobile promises to integrate all the awesome functionality of Google Voice directly into your iPhone.

As you can see from the video, GV Mobile really does bring most of Google Voice’s best functionality into the iPhone. The app’s creator is being smart about it, too, making sure that all the functionality that you’d miss from the iPhone’s default phone app is included in his application by default. That means that features like visual voicemail, a contact (and manual) dialer, and SMS support are all included.

In short: We’ll be ready to move to our Google Voice number as soon as GV Mobile is officially available. If you’ve got an iPod touch, GV Mobile obvious doesn’t (yet) work as a phone, but you can still presumably use it to access your voicemail, send SMS messages, and start a new call that would ring another phone.

Android users already have their own Google Voice application, but it’s great to see the same (or at least similar) functionality working its way to the iPhone. If you haven’t seen what all the Google Voice hubbub is about, check out our first look at Google Voice. UPDATE: GV Mobile was developed by iPhone developer Sean Kovacs, and it looks like it may come with a price tag when it hits the App Store. Still, we’d be surprised if Google doesn’t release a similar app of their own sometime down the line.

To celebrate, they are giving away a $10,000 iTunes card, an iPod touch, a Time Capsule, and a MacBook Pro. All you have to do is download an application from the App Store and you’re automatically entered. You can also enter on their website. It says you can enter up to 25 times per day but I could only get it to work once :( Here’s the info from their site:

As of today, nearly one billion apps have been downloaded around the globe. So we just want to say thanks — a billion. Download an app and you’ll automatically get the chance to win a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card, an iPod touch, a Time Capsule, and a MacBook Pro. Mafia Wars out now on the iPhone

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Appstore, Downloads, Games, Software

Unfortunately, the classic mobile game of Dope Wars (I played hours of it on my old TI-80)
still hasn’t been allowed on the App Store — Apple reportedly wasn’t
happy with the drug-themed gameplay, and so there are only “sugarcoated” versions there now (including one that is literally about sugar, branded as Candy Wars). But Zynga, makers of Scramble Live,
have now released a game called Mafia Wars, which brings the same kind
of premise: you’re a mob boss, and you buy and use firearms to get
money and all sorts of illegal items. The gameplay isn’t exactly the
same (rather than selling for higher and lower prices, you’re “doing
jobs” that cash out earned points for money), but Mafia Wars goes a
little farther than Dope Wars, too, in that, since the game
was originally created on MySpace and Facebook, you can “fight” against
other players and win cash from them, too.

Don’t expect to see any of Grand Theft Auto’s 3D graphics or storyline (for that, you can go try Payback)
– this is a strictly turn-based button pressing simulation. But it’s
got quite a life of its own on Facebook already, so it’s well balanced
and fun for a few pick-up-and-play minutes at a time. It’s free right now on the App Store, though Zynga says there’ll be “premium versions” (whatever that means) that cost from $10 to $40 (whatever that means) available soon.
