NetNewsWire 2 for iPhone, with Google Reader Sync – First Impressions

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Appstore, Downloads, Guides, Iphone, Software, Tips, Top Posts, iTunes

NetNewsWire 2.0 iPhone app

As I’ve mentioned in several ‘coming soon’ type posts on NetNewsWire 2.0, I’ve been looking forward to seeing this new version very much – as it is the version that adds sync with Google Reader.

2.0 is out tonight.  I grabbed the update as soon as I saw it, have been giving it a look and have some early first impressions to share.

The Surprising New Look

Here’s my very first impression of the big new NetNewsWire 2.0: The new icon is much snazzier than the new look and UI of the app itself.  This is the snazzy new icon:

nnwNewIcon

And this is the new main screen within the app:

NetNewsWire for iPhone

For me, there is a pretty stark contrast between the slick, lovely new icon and the very basic, drab look of the app itself.  It features that very old-school, basic cookie-cutter iPhone app interface – and, at least for me, is a bit disappointing feeling on first look.

Here’s a look at a rival native RSS app, Feeds, and its comparable main screen:

Feeds iPhone RSS app

And an individual news item in NetNewsWire and then in Feeds:

Feeds iPhone app

The app has now split into two versions in its 2.0 incarnation – the free version is now ad-supported, and there is a new ‘Premium’ version for $1.99, with no ads but also with no additional features as far as I can see.

The ads in the free version are not too intrusive but are certainly noticeable…

NNW for iPhone

Maybe muted or subtle is a better way to describe the UI.  Here’s a general listing of feeds and the NYT’s individual feed page:

NNW iPhone app

NetNewsWire

Here’s how subtle the marking of a starred item is.  You tap on the star button down at the bottom of the screen, and a very subtle grey star appears at the top right of the item:

NetNewsWire iPhone RSS app

The settings options for the app are also very basic, with literally three items to modify via the Settings app (none within the app itself): username for Google Reader account, whether to display news items with latest at top or bottom, and InstaPaper account details.

What’s New – Apart from Google Reader Sync?

Here are some of the other new items listed on the App Store page for Version 2.0:

  • Lots for performance enhancements
  • Expand and collapse folders
  • Save to InstaPaper, send to Twitter, or send email without leaving the application.
  • New views for starred items and for latest news (published in the last 24 hours)

How’s The New Google Reader Sync?

This is definitely quite impressive so far – easily the thing that has left the best first impression. Sync seems relatively fast, especially from NetNewsWire to GReader, though less so going in the other direction.

I like that the sync also feels very solid.  It has not crashed at all for me so far, lets me browse feeds while it is syncing, remains fully responsive during sync, and shows good and rapidly updated status information while syncing.

This sync is THE big new feature I’ve been so keen to see, and so far it looks good.

Some Missing Things

Some features that I’d like and expect to see, and that I do not see are:

An option to hide feeds that have no unread items

Shared items are not shown – and you cannot share an item via the app

No ‘All Items’ view.

For me, these are basic – and important – features that should really be in this version.

Overall

So that’s it for quick first night (and late night) thoughts on NetNewsWire 2.0.  Mixed feelings for now.  I very much want to like this app.  I like the sync, and feel like maybe the very basic look will grow on me.  I don’t like the missing features noted above, and I really hope NetNewsWire will prove its past reputation (for lack of updates) wrong and provide a swift update to add these missing items.

You can find both versions of NetNewsWire in the App Store now.  I’m not linking it right now because I find it confusing that the free version is still showing an old 1.x version number and icon, despite the fact mine was updated to 2.0 tonight.

iPhone Launches in China on October 1st

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Apple, Iphone, News

I’m sure many of you have heard the news that, after a few meeting with Apple’s top guys, China is expected to get the iPhone. According to Engadget, China Unicom will be announcing today that they will be launching the iPhone on October 1st. Below are the package details. Looks like Apple’s 50 Million device count is about to go way up!

Eight service packages ranging in price from 126 yuan (about $18) to 886 yuan (about $130) per month will be available to Unicom’s 141 million subscribers from a pool of 700 million cellphone toting Chinese. How much will it cost? 5,000 yuan or a steep $733 green retail. Subsidies of about 893 yuan (about $131) to 4,253 yuan (about $623) will be offered for those signing to long-term plans on Unicom’s fledgling 3G network.

NetNewsWire 2.0 Better Integrates Google Reader with Your iPhone – Must have Iphone app for google readers (Free)

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Downloads, Guides, Iphone, Software, Tips, Top Posts

iPhone/iPod touch: Ever since the FeedDemon/ NetNewsWire RSS readers announced exclusive Google Reader syncing, we’ve been waiting for that anywhere-you-go goodness to arrive on iPhones. Now it has, and NetNewsWire 2.0 is almost certainly better than Google Reader’s mobile site.

To be fair, Google Reader’s mobile view is still a great option for Android, Palm Pre, and other non-iPhone browsers that want a look at what’s new in their RSS collections. But the NetNewsWire app doesn’t require a new browser window, won’t lose your place if you venture off to read a link, stores items for offline reading, and offers some great navigation and sharing options, while all the time syncing what you read and star back to your Reader account. Of course, if you’re using another reader for your feed needs, NetNewsWire can easily work from your OPML file (assuming you’re okay with creating a Google account for backup syncing).

Want to post an item to Twitter, save it for later text-only reading in Instapaper, or simply jump to the next unread item in a full item view? NetNewsWire has you covered. Are you an overwhelmed blog editor who, on a frantic Monday morning, only needs to see items from the last 24 hours? Yeah, that’s in there as well. You can customize which feeds are shown or hidden on NetNewsWire’s home page, collapse folders and categories with a single click, and star items from a convenient button that doesn’t require your finger to tap around the very tiny space between a star icon and your left screen edge. The only thing missing is Reader’s Share/Like/comment tools, but it’s our guess that it’s a small subset of users who really need those from a mobile device.

NetNewsWire offers a free download with (not too annoying) ads for iPhones and iPod touch models running at least 3.0 firmware, or a $1.99 version with no advertising.

Use Bing Visual Search to Browse iPhone Applications [Search]

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Apple, News, Tips, Top Posts

Microsoft’s Visual Search tool, introduced earlier this week, turns out to be a pretty helpful platform for browsing free and paid iPhone applications. It’s a trade-off: you won’t have to fire up iTunes, but you will have to install Silverlight.

Reader Anunay writes in with the link to turn Bing into a robust search for iPhone apps. From left-hand links, you can narrow your search by broad categories, specific prices, publishers, or other criteria. Hovering over an app icon gives you ranking, category, and release date information, and clicking an icon brings you to a Bing search page for that app—which, in turn, generally leads you to a developer’s page and iTunes link. For those who don’t like to (or can’t) fire up iTunes to browse and search apps, it’s a decent alternative, even if it requires installing a third-party plug-in. Thanks Anunay!

Dev-Team Addresses PwnageTool 3.1 Jailbreak Issues

Author: dexxter  //  Category: 3g Iphone, Bugs, Downloads, Firmware 3.1, Iphone Dev, Jailbreak, Software

##ICON_NAME## The Dev-Team has added a few updates to their firmware 3.1 Jailbreak post. The updates address a few issues people are having with the PwnageTool 3.1 jailbreak. Check out the updates below.

Remember, PwnageTool is the jailbreak that is Mac compatible. Also, PwnageTool 3.1 only works on the 1st gen iPod touch, 1st gen iPhone (iPhone 2G) and the iPhone 3G. We are still waiting for a jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS, the 2nd gen iPod touch and the 3th gen iPod touch as well as a version of the jailbreak that is PC compatible (the PC compatible version of the jailbreak is called redsn0w).

Update 2: Unlocked users on the 3G will probably notice that the name and/or logo of their carrier is missing, but they still have full bars and a signal. So far this seems to be purely a cosmetic issue and it doesn’t impact your signal or coverage. We hope to have this issue “fixed” when we release the 3GS compatible version of PwnageTool. This is very likely tied to Update #3…

Update 3: As of 3.1, the *.ipcc carrier bundles are signed, and you can no longer force tethering capability simply by crafting your own bundle. The good news is this obstacle can probably be overcome by virtue of the jailbreak. But so far that extra hack is not part of the PwnageTool custom IPSW creation.

Dev-Team Releases Firmware 3.1 Jailbreak for iPhone 2G, 3G and the iPod touch 1G

Author: dexxter  //  Category: 3g Iphone, Downloads, Firmware 3.1, Fixes, Hacks, Iphone Dev, Ipod Touch, Jailbreak, News, Software

Dev-Team The Dev-Team has released a jailbreak for the 3.1 firmware… it jailbreaks the iPhone 2G, 3G and the iPod touch 1G. You will want to read the entire post before doing anything. Below is a snippet of the post but, you can check out the full article and download the files HERE.

This is the low down on our tools for use with the 3.1 firmware from Apple, please read the whole post in full before attempting anything. Because of changes with Apple’s update techniques this will be a multipart release, starting with the initial release of PwnageTool for Mac OS X – this application supports the iPhone 1st Generation (2G), The iPhone 3G and the iPod touch 1G. NB: THIS DOES NOT SUPPORT THE 3GS OR NEW IPOD TOUCH. redsn0w for Mac OS X and Windows will follow sometime in the near future, please don’t bug us about it – we’ll release when we have something ready.

1.GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should only upgrade to 3.1 with a PwnageTool created .ipsw. – Stay away from Apple’s direct updates as described here and here please get up to speed on the whole subject by reading the information contained in these posts.
2.If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.1 unlock works with this PwnageTool release. iPhone 3G users upgrading to 3.1 will need to continue using ultrasn0w with a PwnageTool created 3.1 .ipsw
3.Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
4.Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
5.At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.1 capable version of PwnageTool.
6.This app is suitable for the recent 3.1 release.
7.This version of PwnageTool will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
8.PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch (1st Generation) and the iPhone 3G.

Firmware 3.1 Adds Video Editing Ability to iPhone 3G and iPod touch

Author: dexxter  //  Category: 3g Iphone, Apple, Downloads, Firmware 3.1, News, Software

##ICON_NAME## I have heard that the 3.1 firmware gives the iPhone 3G (and the iPod touch) video editing capability so, I decided to check it out. Indeed, the firmware update does allow the iPhone 3G to edit video (without jailbreaking mind you). Below is how it works.

You will first need someone to email you a video file (I had Doug email me one he took with his iPhone 3GS). Once you have received the video, you can open the email and select the arrow on the lower menu bar. This will give you five options; Reply, Reply All, Forward, Save Video and Cancel. Once you select Save Video, the video will get saved to your Camera Roll. You can then go into your Camera Roll and select the video.

After selecting the video, you are able to watch the video and edit it. To edit a video, tap on the timeline at the top of the page you can then drag your finger to the start and end points on the video. When you select trim, you have the option to trim the original video or save the trimmed potion as a new clip in your Camera Roll.

So, even though you can’t take video on your unjailbroken iPhone 3G… I guess you can at least edit it. I’m not really sure there is a huge purpose to this feature but, there you go.

I only tested this on an iPhone 3G but, it is said to work on an iPod touch running 3.1.1 as well.

Saurik Duplicates Apple’s Firmware Signing Server

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Apple, Fixes, Hacks, News, Software, iTunes

##ICON_NAME## Saurik has developed a server that you can point your iTunes to and it will not only authenticate firmware versions that Apple no longer signs (allowing them to be installed) it also saves information during the authentication and will allow you to downgrade later if Apple doesn’t want you to. This blog post he wrote is a really good read, but it’s really long. Here’s a quick highlight but make sure you read the whole thing here: saurik.com/id/12

To this end, I have constructed a server that duplicates the functionality exposed by Apple’s signature server, except using “on file” results rather than live requests.

All we need, then, is to make iTunes use it. Luckily, most operating systems also have the ability to locally define bypasses on specific hostnames through a file called hosts. Using this, we can redirect requests to Apple’s signature server to Cydia.

So, open the file C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts (Windows) or /etc/hosts (Mac OS X) and add the following entry to the bottom of the file.

74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

Now, when iTunes thinks it is talking to Apple, it is talking to Cydia instead. Doing this will allow iTunes to access signatures already stored by Cydia’s “on file” feature.

This server will also act as a cache for any SHSH blobs it hasn’t seen, acting as an intermediary to Apple’s server. This effectively registers your device with the “on file” mechanism, which means you can now enjoy the protections of being able to downgrade your firmware in the future even if you aren’t jailbroken.

This point should be stressed: even if you don’t jailbreak, and even if you never intend to jailbreak, you should consider using the new “on file” service.

Let’s say that Apple releases an OS upgrade in the future, you take it, and they break something important. Maybe they break your e-mail account, or your todo list. Your business is now crippled.

If only you could downgrade, right? Alas, Apple won’t let you anymore. That’s where the new signature cache server comes in: by doing your restores through this server you secure your ability to not accept upgrades from Apple if the need is dire.
