Sekai Camera – Cool camera app that does tagging on gps very well!

Author: dexxter  //  Category: 3G S iPhone, 3GS iphone, 3g Iphone, Appstore, Downloads, Firmware 3.0.1, Firmware 3.1, Firmware 3.1.2, Ipod Touch, Software, ipod touch 3g

Sekai Camera is an iPhone application/service that allows you to place air tags and photos in any location around Japan – and soon the world when its launched worldwide.
Its currently available for a free download from the app store.

Here I have Sekai Camera booted up on my iPhone. It uses the GPS and compas in the iPhone 3GS to determine where the phone is and in which location the phone is pointing in.
As you can see from this photo, there are things floating about the screen and a radar type display at the top.

As I move the phone around, the tags and photos will scroll with the view until they disappear off the side of the screen. That’s because those tags and photos are tagged to a single location.

The video below in Akihabara gives you a good idea of how it works. In the video you will see tweets, photos and air tags floating about. In the video, you will see a load of green air tags with the name “??? ??” (Anegasaki Nene) – a character from Love Plus. A load of Nene fans went around spilling her name all over the place.

Here I am having lunch tagging my food. The tag will remain in this spot forever and can be seen by anybody else with an iPhone+Sekai Camera in the area.

If I click on a tweet or an air tag, I can see who left it there – their photo and profile. As you saw from the Sekai Camera vid in Akihabara above, air tag pollution is starting to happen with the area just full of tags.

We planned to do a hijack of a town leaving Mirai-chan’s image everywhere but not got round to it yet ^^;

I can see use cases where shops can leave food coupons floating outside their shop.
By looking at the world through Sekai Camera, not only can you see the normal stuff that you view with your upper set of eyes, you can also see a whole lot more information including landmarks.

When somebody clicks on a photo, tweet or air tag I left lying around, they would see my profile like this.

Another interesting thing about Sekai Camera is that you can “pocket” stuff. If I see a photo or air tag left by somebody, I can pocket it and view it later. Great for treasure hunting games.

PwnageTool 3.1.4

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Firmware 3.0.1, Firmware 3.1, Firmware 3.1.2, Iphone Dev, Pwnage, Quickpwn, Redsn0w, Software

Here are some details on our latest version of PwnageTool for Mac OS X this supports the 3.1.2 release of the iPhone software for iPhone 3G/3G(S) and iPod Touch 2G.

For 3GS users not already jailbroken and stuck at 3.1.x, this version of PwnageTool has a side feature to jailbreak your 3GS.  It uses a simple implementation of the usb control msg hole found [by @chronicdev@geohot, and our very own gray].

Now that the hole is public and in use, we expect Apple to close it by the next major firmware update. That’s why 3GS users need to get their ECID hashes for 3.1.x now, and need to stay onboard the “jailbreak train” in all future updates.  For more details on what this means, please see our earlier posts or ask in our comments section (moderated by the always helpful @angie and @confucious!).

For the early adopters who ran blackra1n and are having problems with mobilesubstrate or winterboard, you can install a custom .ipsw from PwnageTool, that will fix these issues, (btw all previously jailbroken devices will accept the custom .ipsw that is created with PwnageTool)

SUMMARY:

  • The iPhone 3GS is now supported out of the box in PwnageTool 3.1.4 (or if you have upgraded to 3.1.x in iTunes)
  • The iPod 2G is now supported out of the box in PwnageTool 3.1.4 (or if you have upgraded to 3.1.x in iTunes)
  • The iPod touch 3G is NOT supported

DETAILS:

  1. GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G(S) with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service then you should only update your device with an .ipsw that is made with the new PwnageTool. There are no second chances with this. You need to remember that PwnageTool will provide an upgrade path to newer versions of the iPhone software in the future.
  2. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
  3. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
  4. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.1.4 capable version of PwnageTool.
  5. PwnageTool will work for the iPhone 3GS
  6. PwnageTool will work for the iPod touch 2G
  7. PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G(S) and the iPod touch (1st Generation and 2nd Generation) but NOT the iPod touch 3rd generation.
  8. For 3G and 3G(S) users who are Pwned, PwnageTool is your key to updating in the future, just remember to never install an update directly from Apple, always use an .ipsw that has been created with PwnageTool.
  9. There is no Windows version of PwnageTool it is a Mac OS X tool only, we are not developing a Windows version of PwnageTool.

What’s a Baseband?

The ‘baseband’ is the generic nickname given to the internal components of the iPhone that handle the phone calls and Internet access. This ‘baseband’ is a tiny and unique independent computer system that runs inside your iPhone, it is separate to the main system that handles the applications (such as email and google maps) and it talks to the main part of the phone over an internal communications network.

Think of it like a cable modem or other peripheral that is attached to your home PC that needs occasional updates. When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features).

The 3.1.2 update for the iPhone 3G and 3GS contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband.

Dev-Team Talks About the blackra1n Jailbreak

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Downloads, Firmware 3.0.1, Firmware 3.1, Firmware 3.1.2, Jailbreak, Redsn0w, Software, Unlock

##ICON_NAME## The Dev-Team has updated their blog with a little snippet about the blackra1n jailbreak. Below is what they have to say. You can see the original article HERE.

Update: geohot released a Windows jailbreak called “blackra1n” which is similar to redsn0w in that it covers multiple devices (and it covers beyond just firmware 3.0.1 where redsn0w currently stops). blackra1n is not a carrier unlock. You must always avoid updating your baseband to maintain your unlockability. If you use blackra1n to jailbreak 3.1 or 3.1.2, the steps you take before running blackra1n will prevent the unlock from working on your iPhone for potentially a very long time. By the way, we haven’t yet tested whether a blackra1n’d device can accept a custom IPSW without tweaks, but if it doesn’t then it should only require a minor change.

Blackra1n jailbreak now available for iPhone OS 3.1.2, iPod touch 3G

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Blackra1n, Downloads, Firmware 3.1, Firmware 3.1.2, Jailbreak, Unlock

Wow, judging by our tips jar we’d say you’re all pretty darn excited about Geohot’s Blackra1n jailbreak, which lets you open up iPhone OS 3.1.2devices including the iPod touch 3G and new iPhone 3GSs — but you can’t unlock yet, so don’t get any big ideas about switching carriers. Windows-only at the moment, but with this level of enthusiasm out there we can’t imagine a Mac version is far behind.

Dev Team Talks about 3.1.2 Firmware

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Downloads, Firmware 3.1.2, Hacks, Iphone Dev, News

##ICON_NAME## Yesterday, Apple released firmware 3.1.2. Yes, I know this happened yesterday, but we are currently on vacation in the beautiful countryside of Wisconsin and our AT&T Cellular Data Card is having sketchy service (go figure). :)

According to the Dev Team, you will want to hold off on up upgrading because neither PwnageTool or redsn0w work on 3.1.2. Below is what they had to say on their blog.

WARNING! At 10.20AM PDT on October 8th 2009 Apple released the 3.1.2 version (7D11) of the iPhoneOS.

If you care about your jailbreak and unlock, don’t update your device – 3G and 3G(S) owners should pay particular attention to this warning.

PwnageTool and redsn0w are not yet compatible with 3.1.2
There is no estimated release time for compatible tools (please don’t bug us about this).
Any information we have regarding this update will be posted here.

Apple Releases iPhone Firmware Update 3.1.2, Fixes Network Issues but Breaks Jailbreak

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Apple, Downloads, Firmware 3.1.2, Iphone, Software

Screen shot 2009-10-08 at 11.40.04 AM

Apple has just released a new firmware update, version 3.1.2 for the existing iPhone and iPod Touch range, which contains no new features but fixes an important issue with cellular network reception. The new software fixes dropped cell connections until the iPhone is restarted, according to Apple.

However, it looks like the update does contain a new baseband version in order to fix the issue, thereforeif you have an unlocked iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS, do not update until there is confirmation from a trusted source, like the iPhone DevTeam. If you’re planning to jailbreak, you should wait as this firmware version is currently incompatible with the latest jailbreak tools. But updates will soon be released to resolve the compatibility problem, according to the iPhone DevTeam.

The complete-ish list of changes, according to Apple’s cryptic update notes, is as documented below:

  • Resolves sporadic issue that may cause iPhone to not wake from sleep.
  • Resolves intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular network services until restart.
  • Fixes bug that could cause occasional crash during video streaming.

Clearly, it indicates no new features, unless there are some hidden ones. ;)

To download the new firmware for your iPhone, select the model below to download it directly from Apple’s server or open iTunes and click iTunes –> Check for Updates in the menu bar.
