Despite the incredible realism of the drawing above to the left, we’re probably not looking at iPhone OS 4.0 right here. Instead we’ve got Apple doing what Apple does: applying for a patent for some pretty vague functionality that may or may not end up in a device someday. No harm in that game, but it looks like Google’s already done the “put a contact on the home screen with their picture” thing before Apple got a chance, as demonstrated on the right. There are other little tidbits to Apple’s approach, however. Apple is naturally showing that little numeric badge we know so well, to show what sort of new activity the contact has (hopefully that pulls calls, SMS and email into one pretty little package, like we’ve seen on other modern operating systems), but Apple also mentions that “an icon associated with an entity can be temporarily displayed on the mobile device based on the proximity of the mobile device to the entity.” So, Stalking 2.0. We like it, and hope to see it in some future iPhone software, but between the crazy broad claims in the rest of the patent and Android’s prior art, we’d say Apple’s chances of getting this 2008 submission approved are pretty slim.

Recently, AT&T has hinted at charging high bandwidth users more for their data usage. Apparently, people are a little unhappy about it and are going to attempt to bring AT&T “to it’s knees”. How? A website called “The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs” has asked it’s readers to join them by using as much data over the cellular network as possible on Friday, December 18th at noon Pacific.

Subject: Operation Chokehold
On Friday, December 18, at noon Pacific time, we will attempt to overwhelm the AT&T data network and bring it to its knees. The goal is to have every iPhone user (or as many as we can) turn on a data intensive app and run that app for one solid hour. Send the message to AT&T that we are sick of their substandard network and sick of their abusive comments. The idea is we’ll create a digital flash mob. We’re calling it in Operation Chokehold. Join us and speak truth to power!

If you’d like to get involved, here’s some tips. Obviously, turn off your Wifi; the point here is to bog down the cellular network so you’ll want to avoid connecting to a local wireless network. Also, you’ll want to use a high bandwidth app like YouTube or other video website. Make sure you check out the comments on the blog linked to above, there are some great ideas on using up bandwidth like NASA’s live video stream or Ustream’s new uploader.

WARNING! At 10.20AM PDT on October 8th 2009 Apple released the 3.1.2 version (7D11) of the iPhoneOS.

If you care about your jailbreak and unlock, don’t update your device – 3G and 3G(S) owners should pay particular attention to this warning.

PwnageTool and redsn0w are not yet compatible with 3.1.2
There is no estimated release time for compatible tools (please don’t bug us about this).
Any information we have regarding this update will be posted here.
You can also follow us on twitter – @iphone_dev
@wizdaz has made a very cool DevTeam alert widget for his upcoming app called SmartScreen

The new version adds a few new features including the implementation of the copy/paste and linking capabilities right in your chat. Below is more info about the update and a video demo.

fring has just released a slick, brand- new version (2.0.0.4) with lots of new features available, including a new look, more integration between social networks, improved voice and much more.

The new version includes a new user profile, which allows you to update your fring nickname, avatar and mood text, and broadcast it back to your IM friends. You can also see your friends’ avatars and mood texts from other networks – currently on Skype, others coming soon.

You can also now use SkypeOut & SIP to call your friends directly from the fring address book with a much clearer line thanks to our voice team’s big effort to improve voice quality.

If that’s not enough we added copy/paste & linking capabilities to save you time while chatting away with your friends and speakerphone support for all voice calls.

German users can also now enjoy fring on iPhone/ iPod touch in their native language.

How much will it cost? 5,000 yuan or a steep $733 green retail. Subsidies of about 893 yuan (about $131) to 4,253 yuan (about $623) will be offered for those signing to long-term plans on Unicom’s fledgling 3G network.

It’s a trade-off: you won’t have to fire up iTunes, but you will have to install Silverlight.

Reader Anunay writes in with the link to turn Bing into a robust search for iPhone apps. From left-hand links, you can narrow your search by broad categories, specific prices, publishers, or other criteria. Hovering over an app icon gives you ranking, category, and release date information, and clicking an icon brings you to a Bing search page for that app—which, in turn, generally leads you to a developer’s page and iTunes link. For those who don’t like to (or can’t) fire up iTunes to browse and search apps, it’s a decent alternative, even if it requires installing a third-party plug-in. Thanks Anunay!

This is the low down on our tools for use with the 3.1 firmware from Apple, please read the whole post in full before attempting anything. Because of changes with Apple’s update techniques this will be a multipart release, starting with the initial release of PwnageTool for Mac OS X – this application supports the iPhone 1st Generation (2G), The iPhone 3G and the iPod touch 1G. NB: THIS DOES NOT SUPPORT THE 3GS OR NEW IPOD TOUCH. redsn0w for Mac OS X and Windows will follow sometime in the near future, please don’t bug us about it – we’ll release when we have something ready.

1.GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should only upgrade to 3.1 with a PwnageTool created .ipsw. – Stay away from Apple’s direct updates as described here and here please get up to speed on the whole subject by reading the information contained in these posts.
2.If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.1 unlock works with this PwnageTool release. iPhone 3G users upgrading to 3.1 will need to continue using ultrasn0w with a PwnageTool created 3.1 .ipsw
3.Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
4.Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
5.At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.1 capable version of PwnageTool.
6.This app is suitable for the recent 3.1 release.
7.This version of PwnageTool will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
8.PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch (1st Generation) and the iPhone 3G.
