Operation Chokehold: Attempt to Bring Down AT&T Network

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Bugs, Hacks, Iphone, News

AT&TRecently, AT&T has hinted at charging high bandwidth users more for their data usage. Apparently, people are a little unhappy about it and are going to attempt to bring AT&T “to it’s knees”. How? A website called “The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs” has asked it’s readers to join them by using as much data over the cellular network as possible on Friday, December 18th at noon Pacific.

Subject: Operation Chokehold
On Friday, December 18, at noon Pacific time, we will attempt to overwhelm the AT&T data network and bring it to its knees. The goal is to have every iPhone user (or as many as we can) turn on a data intensive app and run that app for one solid hour. Send the message to AT&T that we are sick of their substandard network and sick of their abusive comments. The idea is we’ll create a digital flash mob. We’re calling it in Operation Chokehold. Join us and speak truth to power!

If you’d like to get involved, here’s some tips. Obviously, turn off your Wifi; the point here is to bog down the cellular network so you’ll want to avoid connecting to a local wireless network. Also, you’ll want to use a high bandwidth app like YouTube or other video website. Make sure you check out the comments on the blog linked to above, there are some great ideas on using up bandwidth like NASA’s live video stream or Ustream’s new uploader.

Apple’s iPhone has a worm, 3 million at risk

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Bugs, Hacks, Iphone, Jailbreak

iworm

With what must have been startling rapidity what started out as a proof of concept exploit of jailbroken iphones has turned into a security nightmare for iPhone owners, with the worm, called iPhone/Privacy.A having the ability to allow hackers to connect to any jailbroken iPhone, act silently and retrieve e-mail messages, SMS messages, calendar appointments, contacts, photos, music files, videos, along with any other data recorded by by iPhone apps.

An estimated 3.2 million iPhones are vulnerable to this exploit, and while mitigating steps, such as changing the root password, is available, this is said to break many applications designed for jailbroken iPhones which are written to take advantage of a hardcoded password. As a mitigating step it also of course leaves those iPhones vulnerable to dictionary attacks commonly used to attack machines on the internet.

Jailbraking iPhones is relatively common, as it is the only way to access needed functionality like multi-tasking and desirable features such as customizing the user interface.

At present there are no antivirus applications for the iPhone.

Dev-Team Addresses PwnageTool 3.1 Jailbreak Issues

Author: dexxter  //  Category: 3g Iphone, Bugs, Downloads, Firmware 3.1, Iphone Dev, Jailbreak, Software

##ICON_NAME## The Dev-Team has added a few updates to their firmware 3.1 Jailbreak post. The updates address a few issues people are having with the PwnageTool 3.1 jailbreak. Check out the updates below.

Remember, PwnageTool is the jailbreak that is Mac compatible. Also, PwnageTool 3.1 only works on the 1st gen iPod touch, 1st gen iPhone (iPhone 2G) and the iPhone 3G. We are still waiting for a jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS, the 2nd gen iPod touch and the 3th gen iPod touch as well as a version of the jailbreak that is PC compatible (the PC compatible version of the jailbreak is called redsn0w).

Update 2: Unlocked users on the 3G will probably notice that the name and/or logo of their carrier is missing, but they still have full bars and a signal. So far this seems to be purely a cosmetic issue and it doesn’t impact your signal or coverage. We hope to have this issue “fixed” when we release the 3GS compatible version of PwnageTool. This is very likely tied to Update #3…

Update 3: As of 3.1, the *.ipcc carrier bundles are signed, and you can no longer force tethering capability simply by crafting your own bundle. The good news is this obstacle can probably be overcome by virtue of the jailbreak. But so far that extra hack is not part of the PwnageTool custom IPSW creation.

Apple Releases iPhone OS 3.0.1 to Fix SMS Flaw

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Bugs, Firmware 3.0.1, Fixes, Iphone

Today, Apple released a patch to fix the serious SMS security vulnerability that we reported yesterday. iPhone OS 3.0.1, by the looks of it, does not include any new features, but it’s a good idea to update.

Updating to 3.0.1 will make your jailbreak and/or unlock go away so if you don’t want to loose your jailbreak then I suggest you wait a bit while the iPhone Dev Team give the green light to update.

If you want to read the release document from Apple you may do so here

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Apple, Bugs, Downloads, Firmware 3.0.1, Fixes, Software, iTunes

Apple today released the first update to the iPhone 3.0 software to address an SMS vulnerability that threatened the security of your iPhone. From Apple:

We appreciate the information provided to us about SMS vulnerabilities which affect several mobile phone platforms. This morning, less than 24 hours after a demonstration of this exploit, we’ve issued a free software update that eliminates the vulnerability from the iPhone. Contrary to what’s been reported, no one has been able to take control of the iPhone to gain access to personal information using this exploit.

So plug in your phone, fire up iTunes, and click Check for Update to get the latest and greatest. [Apple Support via Gizmodo]

iPhone SMS Bug Released Today – Leaves all iPhones Vulnerable to Attack

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Bugs, Hacks, News

SMS Bug According to Forbes, today two researchers Charlie Miller and Collin Mulliner plan on releasing a bug in the iPhone SMS during the Black Hat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas. The bug is said to allow a person to take over an iPhone via SMS.

“Using a flaw they’ve found in the iPhone’s handling of text messages, the researchers say they’ll demonstrate how to send a series of mostly invisible SMS bursts that can give a hacker complete power over any of the smart phone’s functions. That includes dialing the phone, visiting Web sites, turning on the device’s camera and microphone and, most importantly, sending more text messages to further propagate a mass-gadget hijacking.”

If that doesn’t sound scary enough, the only way to prevent the attack is to turn your iPhone off.

“If you receive a text message on your iPhone any time after Thursday afternoon containing only a single square character, Charlie Miller would suggest you turn the device off. Quickly.”

The researchers say that they notified Apple about the bug a month ago however, Apple has not released a fix for it.

Do we know if this is actually true or not… No. Do we know if iPhones all over the world are going to be hacked today… No. If you receive an email with a single square character, should you turn off your iPhone… that is up to you!

Did anybody receive this virus? i don’t think i will be affected much by it as my iphone does not even have a data connection so theres not much of a way the hacker can do things with my iphone….

Camera Roll Can’t Handle 10,000 Pictures *FIXED*

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Bugs, Fixes, Guides, Iphone

PhotosLast night I was taking some pictures and video and went back to review them and there weren’t in my camera roll. I didn’t think much of it because my iPhone is jailbroken and things like that happen when you test as many apps as we do. I decided to respring my springboard and try again. That didn’t work so I rebooted. Still didn’t work. Now I’m getting worried. I really don’t want to restore my iPhone and start all over again. I did notice that the pictures I was taking were showing up in the little thumbnail at the bottom left of the camera app each time I took one. I then thought my iPhone might be full so, I plugged into iTunes to see. Nope, I had plenty of room. Ah ha! I thought I figured it out. Most cameras name pictures starting with img_0001 and go to img_9999 and start over. I thought it had done that and the pics were starting over at the top of my camera roll… nope.

I then decided to plug in my iPhone and see if the pics and vids were there. They were! And guess what I found? The filenames of the pics not showing up are img_10001 through img_10005. This means there is a major bug in Apple’s firmware. I can’t see the photos in any other apps either. Now I can’t upload them to flickr, facebook, twitter, youtube, etc. The worst part of all? I have no idea how to fix it. The only way I can think of is to restore my iPhone. If you have an idea, I’d love to try it. I’m quite annoyed that it doesn’t work anymore.

Update: I have found a fix:

1. Sync your iPhone to backup and copy all photos off your camera roll using your computer.

2. Use a directory browser such as PhoneView (Mac – download), iPhone Browser (PC – download) or SSH to delete these folders:

camerarolldelete

3. Now just take a picture and you’ll see it shows up in the camera roll. I noticed that taking a screenshot still used the old numbering scheme. I went back and deleted everything again and rebooted my iPhone and then it works fine.

Why Ipod and not Zune? Leap Year Bug ZAPS Zune music players!

Microsoft’s Zune music player is shown in brown, black and white

WASHINGTON – It wasn’t a very Happy New Year for owners of Microsoft’s Zune.

Thousands of the MP3 music players froze on New Year’s Eve around the
world due to what Microsoft described as a bug in the device’s internal
clock.

The bug only affected the original, 30-gigabyte version of the
music player that was introduced by the Redmond, Washington-based
Microsoft in 2006 as its answer to Apple’s wildly popular iPod.

Later devices with 80GB and 120GB of memory were not affected.

Microsoft was alerted to the problem when Zune forums and
discussion boards lit up overnight with complaints from Zune owners
around the world that their devices players had stopped working.

Many of the messages were signed “Victim of the December 31st 2008
Zune 30 Meltdown!” and the mass Zune stoppage gave rise to puns such as
“Zunesday” and “Z2K,” a reference to the millennium Y2K bug.

Microsoft initially put out a statement saying owners of the 30GB
Zune may experience “issues” when booting up the device, asked for
patience and apologized for the inconvenience.

Several hours later, another statement on Microsoft’s zune.net explained the problem and said it would essentially self-resolve.

“There is a bug in the internal clock driver causing the 30GB
device to improperly handle the last day of a leap year,” Microsoft
said.

“The issue should be resolved over the next 24 hours as the time
change moves to January 1, 2009,” it said. “We expect the internal
clock on the Zune 30GB devices will automatically reset tomorrow.

“By tomorrow you should allow the battery to fully run out of power
before the unit can restart successfully then simply ensure that your
device is recharged, then turn it back on,” it advised users.

iPhone 3G Unlock Complete & OS X 10.5.6 DFU Error Fixes!

Author: dexxter  //  Category: 3g Iphone, Apple, Bugs, Firmware 2.1, Software, Tips, Top Posts, Unlock

iPhoneThe dev team has announced the completion of the iPhone 3G unlock on their website, blog.iphone-dev.org.
They will are planning to release the unlock via QuickPwn or BootNeuter
by New Year’s Eve. You must be running baseband 2.11.07 or earlier.
That means if you’ve upgraded firmware since 2.1 without using a tool
that creates a custom firmware then you’ll have to wait until they get
the newer baseband unlocked. Others who will also be waiting are 2nd
Generation iPod Touch owners. Work on it’s jailbreak won’t begin until
at least 2009. Finally, if you’re having troubles with the latest OS X
10.5.6 update there are some possible fixes. There are try at your own
risk:

1. Replace the following plugin kexts from within
IOUSBFamily.kext with the ones from 10.5.5 and then rebuild kextcache
(if you don’t understand this, then you shouldn’t attempt it!)

/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBHub.kext

/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext

2. Use a USB hub in-between the DFU device and the Mac and insert/reinsert the iPhone’s USB cable.

3. Use a PwnageTool created .ipsw on Windows! Oh the irony!
