redsn0w in june

Author: dexxter  //  Category: 3g Iphone, Downloads, Firmware 3.0, Iphone Dev, Ipod Touch, Jailbreak, Pwnage, Quickpwn, Redsn0w, Software, Unlock, YellowSnow

redsn0w is an easy to use, multi-platform, multi-device jailbreaking and unlocking (iPhone 2G only) tool for theiPhone 2G (original iPhone), the iPhone 3G (but not the 3GS) and also the iPod touch (first and second generation). Currently it is available for Windows and Mac OS X (there are some issues using redsn0w with OS X PPC, please use an Intel Mac until we have this problem resolved).

REDSN0W PROVIDES SIMILAR FUNCTIONALITY TO QUICKPWN.

If you want to build custom firmware files with more flexibility it is suggested that you use ‘PwnageTool’ on Mac OS X.

  1. GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use redsn0w right now. Ultrasn0w (the 3G carrier unlock) is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be released via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 carrier unlock works with this redsn0w release.
  2. Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you will be able to get it via Cydia or Icy).
  3. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
  4. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
  5. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the latest version of redsn0w.
  6. This app is suitable for the recent 3.0 release
  7. redsn0w will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
  8. redsn0w WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch, iPod touch 2G and the iPhone 3G (not the iPhone 3GS).

To use redsn0w simply upgrade the device in iTunes to firmware version 3.0 and run redsn0w to activate and jailbreak the device (and if you are using an original iPhone 2G, it will unlock it too!)

Firmware 3.0 jailbreak progress update

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Downloads, Firmware 3.0, Iphone Dev, Jailbreak, News, Software

The Dev-Team has updated their blog with additional information about the progress of the 3.0 jailbreak. It seems they are having a few setbacks.
“    * We have two issues that we’ve been trying to resolve:

    1. There are new 3.0 complications with YouTube.app if you’re on a hacktivated (unofficially activated) device
    2. There’s a bug in Apple’s new version of asr that our custom IPSW’s are tickling and causing crashes on, on some devices. (For the nerdy, the details of that bug were tweeted by planetbeing a month ago.

    * We have a workaround for #2. For #1, we’ll try our best to get it fixed but we may end up releasing a preliminary jailbreak in which YouTube doesn’t work for hacktivated devices, and then follow that up with a more complete jailbreak when we can.

So, I’m not sure when we will see a jailbreak. Sounds like they are working hard on it…go Dev-Team!

Latest new features about the official firmware 3.0 for the iphone

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Downloads, Firmware 3.0, Iphone, News, Software

The iPhone 3.0 software update hit servers a few hours ago, and we spent our afternoon playing with every new feature we could find. Step inside for a look at our favorite new iPhone 3.0 features.

The Goods

  • Spotlight Search: Possibly the best feature from a productivity standpoint, just press the Home button from the Home screen (specifically the first page of your Home screen) to bring up a quick search box that searches across the breadth of your iPhone. That includes contacts, bookmarks, music, applications, notes, calendar, and even email messages. Incidentally, you can also now switch the double-click Home button behavior to launch Spotlight (or the Camera). If you don’t want an item indexed or you want to change the result order, just head to Settings -> General -> Home and tweak the the Search Results (this is also where you change the double-click behavior).
  • Copy and Paste This one wins the award for the longest-time-coming iPhone feature. Just double-tap or tap-and-hold a bit of text to bring up your copy context menu, adjust the start and end points of the text you want to cut or copy, then tap the Copy/Cut button to finish the job. When you’re ready to paste, just double-tap again in an input field. If you changed your mind about a paste or cut, you can also shake to undo.
  • Camera/Photos tweaks: Your Camera and Photo apps both saw some minor but cool feature updates. Pictured, you’ll see that the Camera app now sports a tiny thumbnail of the last picture you took that, when tapped, takes you to your Camera Roll. When you’re sending, copying, or deleting photos from your iPhone, you can now select multiple photos at a time (handy for iPhone reviewers emailing images to themselves).
  • Messages (aka the old SMS app) Well, this will be cool, as soon as AT&T gets it together. Right now, if you’re an AT&T user, it’s exactly the same as it was. When MMS is available, it’ll be capable of sending vCards, pictures, audio files, and Google Maps locations—all of which would be great.
  • Form AutoFill in Safari If you’re anything like this editor, you spend a lot of your time on the iPhone in Safari. I even use Gmail via Safari rather than Mail. Sure I’m always checking that Remember Me box when I log into web sites, but now I can simply hit the AutoFill button and be done with it. It’s a security concern, to be sure, but it’s also extremely convenient.
  • Open Link Options: Anyone who’s gotten used tabbed browsing on the desktop probably feels a little suffocated by the lack of options for opening links on the iPhone. That’s all gotten a bit better with the improved Open link options in the new and improved Safari. Just tap and hold a link for a convenient pop-up that allows you to choose where you want to open the link (and lets you copy it for pasting elsewhere).
  • Search in Mail Like I said, I still do most of my iPhone emailing with Gmail in Safari, but if you use Mail regularly, the new search option, complete with filters, is gangbusters.
  • Shake to Shuffle on iPod: This novel feature has mostly just been weird in my tests. I feel like I have to shake awfully violently for it to work, and it just seems like way more effort than it’s worth.
  • Push Notification: We haven’t seen a lot of applications that already support background push notifications, but you can expect to hear a lot more about this feature as more and more apps integrate them. Right now we’re told that Tap Tap Revenge, the AP Mobile app, and a few others are already working with push. I’ve tried a few but haven’t received any push notifications yet.
  • Voice Memos App: At this point voice recording applications are a dime a dozen in the App Store, but it’s still great to see a really nice one come with iPhone 3.0 out of the box.
  • Landscape on Everything: Okay, not everything, but you now get landscape mode in Messages (SMS), Mail, Stocks, Contacts (strangely, though, just in the Contacts app and not in the Contacts section of the Phone app), and Notes. Big improvement.

Other Things to Note

The big iPhone 3.0 feature that we still can’t try out here in the U.S. is data tethering, which, unfortunately, is still in the works with AT&T and will likely cost much more than it’s worth.

How Do You Like It?

If, like us, you’ve spent your afternoon getting to know the ins and outs of the new iPhone 3.0 update, let’s hear how you like it so far—and what features stand out to you—in the comments. Firmware 3.0 Jailbreak and Unlock Specifics *Updated

Author: dexxter  //  Category: 3g Iphone, Firmware 3.0, Iphone, Jailbreak, Unlock

3.0 FirmwareBelow is the basic information about how jailbreaking and unlocking will work on the 3.0 firmware for the 1st gen iPhone, the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3G S.

Important Note: Upgrading to firmware 3.0 will break your current jailbreak and unlock (see below for more specific information). Also, many of the current jailbroke applications do not work on firmware 3.0.

1st Gen iPhone’s:
You can upgrade to the 3.0 firmware however, you will lose your current jailbreak and your unlock . You will be able to jailbreak as soon as the Dev-Team released the jailbreak which will hopefully be some time today. You will also be able to unlock your iPhone when ultrasn0w is released on Friday. So, if you upgrade to 3.0, you will not be able to unlock your iPhone until Friday. Remember, even once the jailbreak is out, not many of the current jailbroke applications work on firmware 3.0.

Update: According to the comments (and THIS iClarified article), it seems the you will keep your unlock on a 1st gen iPhone even when you upgrade to firmware 3.0. However, there are a few stipulations. Below are those stipulations according to the iClarified article.

“HOWEVER, if you are using the 2G iPhone on an unofficial carrier you may loose your activation. This means that will your network will be detected but you will not be able to use your iPhone.

You will loose your activation if you used QuickPwn to jailbreak your iPhone. If you used PwnageTool you will not.

If you are super excited about iPhone 3.0 and wish to update immediately, either make sure you jailbroke with PwnageTool or rejailbreak using PwnageTool and then do the update.

Otherwise wait for a little bit and the iPhone Dev-Team will release new PwnageTool and QuickPwn utilities shortly.”

Note: The following features of the 3.0 firmware will not work on a 1st Gen iPhone:
    • Send and receive photos, contacts, audio files, and location via MMS
    • Internet Tethering over USB and Bluetooth
    • Stereo Bluetooth

iPhone 3G (2nd Gen iPhones):
You can also upgrade to firmware 3.0 however, you will also lose your jailbreak and your unlock. You will be able to jailbreak as soon as the Dev-Team released the jailbreak (hopefully today). You will also be able to to unlock your iPhone 3G, on the 3.0 firmware, when ultrasn0w is released on Friday. yellowsn0w will not work on the 3.0 firmware. Remember, even once the jailbreak is out, not many of the current jailbroke applications work on firmware 3.0.

iPhone 3G S:
We do not know much about this yet, we will know more about jailbreaking and unlocking the iPhone 3G S on Friday when it is released.

Firmware 3.0 Now Available for Download

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Downloads, Firmware 3.0, Software

AppleApple has released the 3.0 firmware. Connect your iPhone or iPod Touch to iTunes and click update. We will have the direct download for you when we have them. The jailbreak should be released within a few hours. Unlock on Friday.

Firmware 3.0 Jailbreak and Unlock Info

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Firmware 3.0, Jailbreak, Unlock

DevTeamIt seems the DevTeam is gearing up for tomorrow’s release of firmware 3.0 and Friday’s release of the iPhone 3G S. According to their website, they will be doing a live demo of the 3.0 unlock, yellowsn0w, later tonight just before the release of the 3.0 firmware. In the demo you will see the new yellowsn0w and how the unlock works on all 3G iPhones. For a link to the feed you will need to check @MuscleNerd on Twitter.

Below is what the DevTeam has to say about the firmware 3.0 jailbreak:

“Meanwhile, we’re in the middle of testing our PwnageTool and QuickPwn tools, which will work with iTunes 8.2. The jailbreak of course continues to work on 3.0 for all devices it ever worked on, thanks due the Pwnage 2.0 technique released last summer. Our tools will be released no sooner than the Apple release (just in case!).

P.S. For the new iPhone 3GS, please don’t expect periodic updates about any progress we have or don’t have. Nothing gives Apple the upper hand like someone tweeting or blogging partial hack results. That’s not how cat & mouse is played :) That’s how the cat gets fed.”

Firmware 3.0 – No Jailbreak Yet, Hold Off On Upgrading

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Apple, Firmware 3.0, Iphone, Jailbreak, News, Software

BigBoss
posted an article today stating that there is currently no jailbreak
for firmware 3.0 (the real thing, not the betas). Yes, you can use the
3.0 b5 jailbreak tools but, it’s not advised. Below is what BigBoss has
to say on the matter.

As for the rest of us who are not on firmware 3.0 yet, they will
probably have it jailbroke before we even get it on June 17th. However,
even if they do have it jailbroke by the release date, there is rumor
that many of the jailbreak apps will not work on firmware 3.0. Doug
says apps like WinterBoard, WeatherIcon, LiveClock, Cycorder do not
work on firmware 3.0 b5. So, on June 17th, you might want to hold off
on upgrading until we can figure out how everything works. We will keep
you up-to-date.

“Yes, 3.0 GM is released to developers. This is the
final 3.0 release. There is no jailbreak for it at this time. Do not
yet upgrade. There are rumors of people using the 3.0 b5 jailbreak
tools. This is a terrible idea. It will replace most your 3.0GM with B5
components. You will not have a real 3.0 final any longer, instead you
will have a hybrid 3.0 and beta 5. It’s a terrible idea. Next week when
beta 5 expires, your 3.0 jailbreak could expire as well and you would
have to restore all over again.Yes, some people may claim that they did
this and “it works fine”. But as I just stated, it is not a real 3.0
final any longer. Definitely not a good idea nor is this something you
want.

Just wait a few days and you should be ok.”
