Gordon – JavaScript Hack Enables Flash on iPhone

Gordon - Javascript runtime flash hack

The only thing missing from the iPhone is Adobe’s Flash Player. Since Apple has taken so long to approve Flash on the iPhone, a clever programmer by the name of Tobias Schneider has managed to get the iPhone to run interactive apps created using Adobe’s Flash platform. This way of running said apps aren’t subject to Apple’s strict rules of the AppStore because it runs under the built-in web browser: Safari.

It’s called Gordon, and the software doesn’t allow Adobe’s Flash itself to work on the iPhone. Gordon is a JavaScript runtime that allows the browser to run and display .swf (Shockware Flash) files. You go to a website, the JavaScript code loads and does its thing — you’re now flash-enabled.

You may be asking yourself, does this mean my iPhone supports Adobe’s Flash? Well, no — it doesn’t. You cannot just go to any flash-based website and expect it to work. The website has to have Gordon installed. The webmaster would have to add this runtime to every instance of Flash, which is only a few lines of code.

While the project is open source and available to the public, it doesn’t solve one of the biggest problems with Flash — Flash hogs the CPU like a fat kid does cookies!

However, this clever Javascript hack potentially opens the door to a new class of interactive, animated mobile websites. While many web developers rely on Flash to accomplish things that can’t easily be done in HTML; those Flash apps won’t run on the iPhone.

If you want to see Gordon in action head over to Paul Irish’s demos by clicking here — prepare yourself to be amazed. The demos work on both MobileSafari or on any desktop web browser. The animations seem to run very smoothly on the iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.1.2.

Adobe and Apple Working to Put Flash on iPhone—Someday [Flash]

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Announcements, Apple, Flash, News

Adobe’s
CEO told a World Economic Forum crowd that Apple and his company are
working to bring Flash to the iPhone. Unanswered is when that happens,
and in what form.

The Boy Genius Report blog takes a largely positive tack on Shantanu Narayen’s remarks,
but wisely wonders whether Flash will arrive as a standard in-browser
function for mobile Safari, or as a stand-alone app made for browsing
specific sites. PCWorld offers a more downbeat take,
noting the technical hurdles—processor, memory, and Apple’s needs for
access rights restrictions—and a sense of “boardroom wrangling.”

Most
would imagine that Flash on the iPhone is a matter of when, not
if—especially if Flash succeeds in pushing its Flash Lite platform onto
Windows Mobile and Android phones. But let’s hear your take—do you
enjoy having the web stripped of flashing, shiny doodads while you’re
mobile, or does a lack of Flash cripple your browsing life? Tell us in
the comments.

Flash Support One Step Closer to the iPhone?

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Downloads, Flash, News, Software, Videos

One
of the most requested features of the iPhone has always been Flash
support. I know there are quite a few things that many of you would
still like to see implemented into the iPhone but, among the most
requested of these is Flash. Some of you might already be up on this
but, I thought I would pass it along. Adobe had their MAX event
this week (Nov.16th-19th) and during this event they talked about Flash
on mobile devices. Apparently, they well underway to implementing Flash
on Windows Mobile devices and as well as the G1 (Google Android). So,
what does this have to do with the iPhone? I think it definitely brings
us a step closer to seeing Flash for the iPhone. It seems that Adobe is
ready and willing but is still waiting for Apple to give them the go
ahead. Below is a quote from an article by MobileCrunch:

One of Apple’s objections to Flash is that it is a CPU hog and is
not optimized for the ARM11 processors that power the iPhone. In what
seems to be an effort to address that concern, Adobe will also be
announcing a closer collaboration with ARM to accelerate the adoption
of both Flash Player 10 and Adobe AIR on ARM-powered devices.”

I think there is probably a lot more to it than that but, hopefully
we can see things worked out soon. You will have to let me know in the
comments if you think Apple will bring Flash to the iPhone and whether
or not you want them to! Below is a video from the Adobe MAX event.

Flash Is Under Development for the iPhone [IPhone]

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Flash, News, Safari, Software

Adobe is actively developing a Flash player for the iPhone according to web site Flash Magazine—now all they’re waiting for is the “okay” from Apple.

But Steve Job will decide when it will be released….it won’t be a full version of flash because the iphone’s proccessor is not fast enough to support the full version.
