Apple’s iPhone has a worm, 3 million at risk

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Bugs, Hacks, Iphone, Jailbreak

iworm

With what must have been startling rapidity what started out as a proof of concept exploit of jailbroken iphones has turned into a security nightmare for iPhone owners, with the worm, called iPhone/Privacy.A having the ability to allow hackers to connect to any jailbroken iPhone, act silently and retrieve e-mail messages, SMS messages, calendar appointments, contacts, photos, music files, videos, along with any other data recorded by by iPhone apps.

An estimated 3.2 million iPhones are vulnerable to this exploit, and while mitigating steps, such as changing the root password, is available, this is said to break many applications designed for jailbroken iPhones which are written to take advantage of a hardcoded password. As a mitigating step it also of course leaves those iPhones vulnerable to dictionary attacks commonly used to attack machines on the internet.

Jailbraking iPhones is relatively common, as it is the only way to access needed functionality like multi-tasking and desirable features such as customizing the user interface.

At present there are no antivirus applications for the iPhone.

Dev-Team Talks About the blackra1n Jailbreak

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Downloads, Firmware 3.0.1, Firmware 3.1, Firmware 3.1.2, Jailbreak, Redsn0w, Software, Unlock

##ICON_NAME## The Dev-Team has updated their blog with a little snippet about the blackra1n jailbreak. Below is what they have to say. You can see the original article HERE.

Update: geohot released a Windows jailbreak called “blackra1n” which is similar to redsn0w in that it covers multiple devices (and it covers beyond just firmware 3.0.1 where redsn0w currently stops). blackra1n is not a carrier unlock. You must always avoid updating your baseband to maintain your unlockability. If you use blackra1n to jailbreak 3.1 or 3.1.2, the steps you take before running blackra1n will prevent the unlock from working on your iPhone for potentially a very long time. By the way, we haven’t yet tested whether a blackra1n’d device can accept a custom IPSW without tweaks, but if it doesn’t then it should only require a minor change.

Guess we’ll find out when it’s released!

10 seconds. and may work for every version of software *ever*, based on the prettiness of the exploit

Dev-Team Addresses PwnageTool 3.1 Jailbreak Issues

Author: dexxter  //  Category: 3g Iphone, Bugs, Downloads, Firmware 3.1, Iphone Dev, Jailbreak, Software

##ICON_NAME## The Dev-Team has added a few updates to their firmware 3.1 Jailbreak post. The updates address a few issues people are having with the PwnageTool 3.1 jailbreak. Check out the updates below.

Remember, PwnageTool is the jailbreak that is Mac compatible. Also, PwnageTool 3.1 only works on the 1st gen iPod touch, 1st gen iPhone (iPhone 2G) and the iPhone 3G. We are still waiting for a jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS, the 2nd gen iPod touch and the 3th gen iPod touch as well as a version of the jailbreak that is PC compatible (the PC compatible version of the jailbreak is called redsn0w).

Update 2: Unlocked users on the 3G will probably notice that the name and/or logo of their carrier is missing, but they still have full bars and a signal. So far this seems to be purely a cosmetic issue and it doesn’t impact your signal or coverage. We hope to have this issue “fixed” when we release the 3GS compatible version of PwnageTool. This is very likely tied to Update #3…

Update 3: As of 3.1, the *.ipcc carrier bundles are signed, and you can no longer force tethering capability simply by crafting your own bundle. The good news is this obstacle can probably be overcome by virtue of the jailbreak. But so far that extra hack is not part of the PwnageTool custom IPSW creation.

Dev-Team Releases Firmware 3.1 Jailbreak for iPhone 2G, 3G and the iPod touch 1G

Author: dexxter  //  Category: 3g Iphone, Downloads, Firmware 3.1, Fixes, Hacks, Iphone Dev, Ipod Touch, Jailbreak, News, Software

Dev-Team The Dev-Team has released a jailbreak for the 3.1 firmware… it jailbreaks the iPhone 2G, 3G and the iPod touch 1G. You will want to read the entire post before doing anything. Below is a snippet of the post but, you can check out the full article and download the files HERE.

This is the low down on our tools for use with the 3.1 firmware from Apple, please read the whole post in full before attempting anything. Because of changes with Apple’s update techniques this will be a multipart release, starting with the initial release of PwnageTool for Mac OS X – this application supports the iPhone 1st Generation (2G), The iPhone 3G and the iPod touch 1G. NB: THIS DOES NOT SUPPORT THE 3GS OR NEW IPOD TOUCH. redsn0w for Mac OS X and Windows will follow sometime in the near future, please don’t bug us about it – we’ll release when we have something ready.

1.GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should only upgrade to 3.1 with a PwnageTool created .ipsw. – Stay away from Apple’s direct updates as described here and here please get up to speed on the whole subject by reading the information contained in these posts.
2.If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.1 unlock works with this PwnageTool release. iPhone 3G users upgrading to 3.1 will need to continue using ultrasn0w with a PwnageTool created 3.1 .ipsw
3.Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
4.Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
5.At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.1 capable version of PwnageTool.
6.This app is suitable for the recent 3.1 release.
7.This version of PwnageTool will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
8.PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch (1st Generation) and the iPhone 3G.

The Google Voice rejection: What’s needed now

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Apple, Appstore, Cydia, Downloads, Software, Unlock

If you’ve been following coverage of Apple’s rejection of Google Voice for iPhone, you saw TUAW blogger Chris Rawson considering whether pressure from AT&T might have been behind the Google Voice rejection — an assumption first floated by TechCrunch and later substantiated by Daring Fireball. The absurd nature of the app removals is highlighted in the blog post from Riverturn, developers of VoiceCentral, which reports the conversation with an Apple representative.

Google Voice offers free call forwarding to your home, office, and cell, free Internet-accessible voice mail (with text transcription!), free SMS, and a single phone number for life. These free features compete against AT&T’s revenue streams.

When it comes to “duplicate functionality”, Apple doesn’t seem to have any problem allowing applications like AT&T co-branded Virtual Recptionist (iTunes link) in App Store. Virtual Receptionist provides custom call forwarding to three phone numbers, in a similar manner to Google Voice.

In the wake of the rejection, sites like Wired, which should get credit for predicting this issue, have considered whether Apple’s move might invite regulation due to the company’s control over the App Store and possible anti-competitive concerns. A legislative response isn’t out of the question should enough unhappy customers start petitioning their congressmen, especially in a political climate that encourages government intervention in private business. Granted, the iPhone isn’t a monopoly among smartphones, but Apple does hold all the cards when it comes to app approval on the platform.

ChannelWeb’s Rick Whiting (via the Wall Street Journal) points out that the US Department of Justice has “begun investigating whether large U.S. telecommunications companies such as AT&T and Verizon Communications were engaging in anti-competitive behavior, including locking up the most popular handsets. The exclusive deal between AT&T-Apple is said to be drawing the most scrutiny.” Whiting believes that AT&T and Apple may be drawing attention from a DOJ intent on cracking down on exactly this kind of excess. AT&T’s tight relationship with Apple might be affecting how Apple runs App Store, as might be the case with the Google Voice rejection.

How To Jailbreak iPhone OS 3.0.1 with Redsn0w

Author: dexxter  //  Category: Firmware 3.0.1, Hacks, Jailbreak, Redsn0w, Unlock

Apple released iPhone OS 3.0.1 to fix a serious SMS vulnerability in the iPhone OS where your iPhone can be completely taken over by receiving a maliciously crafted SMS message.

In this tutorial, I will show you how to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.0.1 in the same way you would jailbreak iPhone OS 3.0 with redsn0w.

Please follow these instructions clearly and you’ll be a-o-k. Now, before we begin you may notice that we use the iPhone OS 3.0 IPSW to jailbreak our iPhone OS 3.0.1 device, this is no mistake. When you get asked to select the iPhone firmware you have installed then choose the iPhone OS 3.0 IPSW. Please make sure you have updated your device to 3.0.1 by either updating officially via iTunes or restoring via iTunes. Keep in mind that restoring your iPhone will erase your iPhone’s content. Also, please don’t mind the screenshots saying redsn0w version 0.72 – Use the latest redsn0w version, it’ll be the same as the screenshots below.

Note: We are not responsible if your device blows up in the middle of the jailbreak process (it wont) or if your device doesn’t turn on after using this. Use, strictly, at your own risk!

  1. First is first, download redsn0w here (for Windows) or here (for Mac OS X)
  2. Second, Download iPhone OS 3.0 or whatever firmware you’ll be using to jailbreak – here
  3. Alright, now that you have the starting materials downloaded and on your desktop, fire up redsn0w
  4. Click browse and search for the iphone/ipod touch ipsw. In this case, we’re using the iPhone1,2 3.0 restore ipsw)
  5. Redsn0w will then process your ipsw and identify the ipsw
  6. After, redsn0w will prepare data required to jailbreak your device
  7. Redsn0w will ask you if you want to install Cydia or Icy or both or neither. Tick the box if you would like to install them or untick if not.
  8. After you got that done, redsn0w will ask you to turn off your device. (Press and hold down the power button on your device until you see the slide to power off screen and slide to shut down the device) *NOTE* Make sure your device is turned OFF and plugged IN
  9. Redsn0w will then guide you through entering your device into DFU mode
  10. Your device will then reboot then redsn0w will start uploading the jailbreak data onto your device
  11. Once redsn0w is uploading the data onto your device, you’re done! You will then notice images on your device, don’t touch the device till all the images are gone
